Maybe she could distract him enough to get him to come back to bed. The floor was cool under her bare feet as she padded through the dark house. A light under a door she had never been in showed her the place where Jake was holed up. She took a breath and tapped lightly before opening the door. Jake sat at the desk and turned away from the clean surface as he looked out the dark window with a glass of whiskey in his hand. Emma crossed the space, took the glass from his hand, and slid into his lap. She took a sip of the amber liquid before handing it back to him.

Emma went upstairs to Jake's room and opened the door slowly and saw that the room was empty! She entered the room looking around! She kept her backpack on the bed. "Where is he? If he had a fever, he should be laying on the bed right now!" Emma said thinking and turning around to get out of the room but she bumped into a naked chest! She was staring at the drool-worthy chest, ignoring the fact to know who it belonged to! A warm hand touched her bare waist and she got startled as it tickled her!

Stifling. Emma lay on her bed, face buried in a pillow that was damp with tears. She was sixteen now, no longer the toddler who built towers or the child who organized book drives.
