Frisk Chara Undertale Novels & Stories

Undertale crossovers are wild, but finding the ones where Frisk and Chara get woven into other worlds can be a real hunt. I've had the most luck on Archive of Our Own with the right tags—'Frisk (Undertale)', 'Chara (Undertale)', and then something like 'Crossover' or 'Fusion'. The tagging system there is so thorough you can drill down to really specific dynamics, like 'Chara & Frisk' for a complicated sibling-esque bond versus 'Chara/Frisk' for something shippier. The quality tends to be higher, writers there really think about how their personalities would mesh with, say, the world of 'Hollow Knight' or 'Deltarune'.

Wattpad has a mountain of them, but you gotta sift. Search 'Chara Frisk crossover' and you'll get thousands, but maybe only a fifth are coherent. I found this one story where they got dumped into the 'Five Nights at Freddy's' universe that was surprisingly tense and in-character, but it was buried under a lot of poorly spelled RP logs. It's a volume game, basically.

FF.net is the old guard, feels quieter now. You can find some gems from years back, classic crossovers with 'Sonic' or 'Pokémon', often focusing more on adventure than deep character study. The interface is clunky for filtering crossovers though, so you're better off searching manually and hoping.

Okay, so I was just rereading some older 'Flowey is Not a Good Life Coach' fics the other day and it struck me how many of them hinge on that Frisk/Chara push-pull. The dynamic basically offers a built-in excuse for every romance trope in the book, doesn't it? You've got the whole 'sharing a body' thing—that's instant forced proximity, which writers love. But the more interesting bit is the moral ambiguity. Is Chara a ghost, a demon, a traumatized kid, or the narrator? Fics pick an interpretation and run with it, and the romance plot bends to fit. If Chara's vengeful, you get enemies-to-lovers where Frisk is trying to redeem them. If Chara's the sad ghost who needs help, it's hurt/comfort with a supernatural twist. I've even seen a few where Frisk is the unstable one and Chara's the voice of reason, which flips the whole thing on its head.

What really makes it work for fanfiction, I think, is the massive gap in canon. We know so little about either of their true personalities, especially post-pacifist run. That blank slate means writers can project whatever dynamic they want onto them—childhood friends reconnecting, bitter rivals finding common ground, two souls melding into one entity—without worrying too much about breaking character. The most common thread I notice is the power imbalance, though. One soul holds the other's fate, literally. That can go creepy real fast, but when handled with care, it creates this intense, codependent intimacy that's perfect for slow-burn angst. Sometimes it feels less like a romance and more like a study in shared trauma, which honestly might be more fitting for the source material anyway.

Trying to pin down Frisk and Chara in fanfiction is basically watching the fandom have a years-long identity crisis. It’s so much deeper than ‘who’s the good guy.’ The core of it, from what I’ve read, plays with two big questions: can a name be a person, and what happens when a story gets handed off to someone else’s ghost? So many fics treat Frisk as this blank slate absorbing the identities around them—sometimes literally haunted by Chara’s memories, their own sense of self getting fuzzy. Other times, Chara is less a ghost and more Frisk’s own repressed anger or trauma given a voice and a face, which makes the conflict feel internal and way more psychological.

What gets me is the possession trope. It’s rarely a clean ‘evil ghost takes over.’ It’s messy. Frisk might start a sentence and Chara finishes it, or they argue over control of their shared body in the middle of a conversation with Sans. That physical tug-of-war is such a direct metaphor for not feeling at home in your own skin. I read one where Chara wasn’t even malicious, just a sad, fragmented consciousness clinging to Frisk because they were the only one who could remember them. The conflict wasn’t about good versus evil, but about the ethics of letting one identity fade so another can live peacefully. Makes you think.

And then there’s the whole ‘narrator Chara’ angle, which flips everything. If Chara is the one telling Frisk’s story, whose identity is it, really? Are Frisk’s choices their own, or are they being subtly shaped by the tone of the narration? I’ve seen fics where this turns into a battle over authorship, with Frisk fighting back against the story being written for them. It’s heady stuff, and it usually leaves me wondering where the character ends and the author’s own interpretation begins.
