Stepped into the trap. Now I just had to survive it. The elevator descended, carrying me back to ground level. Back to reality. Except reality had just shifted into something I didn’t recognize. And there was no going back.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

The second I let go, I was in for certain death by a thousand glass shards. I squeezed my eyes shut and let the rest of my weight drop. The glass groaned beneath me, then… Nothing happened. My subconscious took over, some old knowledge about weight distribution on unstable surfaces making me lower myself onto my stomach, flat palms pressing against the cool glass. This way, I pushed myself to the side of the roof, only to realize I’d forgotten a little detail in my escape plan. It was an 8ft drop to the ground. If I fell and hit my head- If the wounds from the car crash reopened-Nope. No.Teens climbed out of windows and off roofs all the time. It was going to be fine. I pushed myself further

Chapter Twelve The rain had been relentless all Friday. Sheets of water fell from the sky, drumming against windows and rooftops, as if the heavens themselves were mourning or warning. Nora sat in the art studio, trying desperately to focus on her presentation, but her brush hovered uselessly over the canvas. The colours and lines felt meaningless. Every stroke of paint blurred, smudged by the storm of emotions inside her.

I reached out wildly, trying to grab onto anything to stop my fall, and my hands found the front of Susanna’s hospital gown. The thin fabric tore under the strain, but it was too late. The momentum of my fall pulled her down with me. Time seemed to slow down as gravity took hold. I instinctively twisted my body, curling inward to shield my stomach from the impact of my fall. Pain exploded across my back as I collided with the railing before tumbling further down the stairs. Each collision sent shock waves through my already battered body. Finally, I landed awkwardly on the landing, my breath knocked out of me in one painful gasp.

My body jerked against the cuff as the Odyssey slammed against something hard and began spiralling into space again. Space… we were out… and we were going down. Not zooming through nothingness–down. Gravity. I clenched my jaws as the space surrounding the ship suddenly vanished, replaced with land–red, crusty land. The ship tilted down, then dipped before dropping hard like stone. The gravity was stronger than earth's. “We’re falling!” Kael yelled, his voice cutting through the ringing in my ears. “Brace your–”

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐝 𝐙𝐨𝐧𝐞 The iron grate clattered shut above them with the sound echoing like a gunshot through the narrow brick shaft. Maya fell through the darkness, her stomach lurching as gravity briefly took hold, until her boots hit a layer of cold, stagnant water with a heavy splash.

With a powerful, synchronized shove, the heavy typewriter slipped out of its dark cavity in the underbelly, vanishing into the rushing shadow of the tall grass below with a muffled, heavy thud. ​An instant later, we followed the machine. I let go of the stabilizer bar, allowing the momentum to pitch me out from under the chassis. I dropped from the moving axle frames into the deep, weed-choked drainage ditches of the outer suburbs, my body rolling over and over through the cool, damp clay and thick elephant grass. The impact knocked the wind from my lungs, but the soft earth swallowed the violence of the fall.

It grabbed Kael by the scruff of the neck. It ripped him off its tail. It held Kael up. It looked at the black wolf with disdain. Then it threw him. Kael sailed through the air. He did not land on the catwalk. He fell over the edge. Toward the lava. "KAEL!" I screamed. Time seemed to stop. I watched him fall. He was thrashing in the air. He hit a lower maintenance platform twenty feet down. He slammed into the metal grating with a sickening crunch. He did not move.

Kael whispered, the cadence of the machine returning as he accepted the slaughter. Leo raised his small, stone-cold hand toward the sky. He didn't fire a beam. He didn't release a wave. He reached for the fundamental law of the space around the Watcher tower and simply… removed it. A localized sphere of absolute zero-gravity erupted around the white quartz spire. I watched through the city’s sensors as the physics of the North broke. The Ash Rain, the falling snow, and the very air around the tower suddenly stopped falling. They drifted for a micro-second, then began to accelerate upward at terminal velocity.
