Arms crossed over his chest, his eyes roll over me in disgust and whatever slimy thing he's generating in his brain tells me he has something to say. Possibly nothing good. They shared a warm hug before making their way to the dining area for dinner. Later that night, Kane found himself unable to sleep. Tossing and turning in bed, he was haunted by the image of the girl from his past. Her cries reverberated in his mind, accompanied by the distressing echoes of an unseen child. The experience filled him with a deep sense of horror. Startled from his troubled sleep, he awoke to darkness and let out a sigh before switching on the lights. Sitting at the edge of his bed, Kane reflected on the recurring nightmares that plagued him all too often. They seemed to follow a similar pattern, with subtle variations each time, yet their unsettling nature remained unchanged.

Riley joined him at midnight, unable to sleep. "You should rest," he said. "So should you." They sat in silence, watching the darkness. The wind had picked up, rattling the windows, carrying the scent of distant rain. Somewhere in the hills, a fox barked—a sharp, yipping sound that made Riley's heart jump. "Tell me something," she said. "Something about your life before. Something I don't know." Kyle was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "I used to have nightmares. After my father died. I would dream that I was standing in a field—his field, the one he lost—and it was on fire. Everything was burning. And I couldn't save any of it."

I slid into bed, fearful of what the next day would hold. The nightmare of the attack on my pack filled my sleep. This time, I could clearly make out Xavier in the nightmare. Although I could not recall all of the events from that day and I was not certain if Xavier was even there on that day, he still filled my dreams, mocking me. I know that he did not kill my mother, but I kept seeing his face as my mother died. The nightmare shifted and I had visions of an attack on the Red Moon Pack. I saw Xavier standing over Alpha Callan, who lay dead on the ground. I heard Lizzie scream and saw a rogue chase her down and rip out her throat.

He just didn't want to see it. Now, on the forty-first night, the nightmare is worse than ever. His face is turning pale. His lips are blue. In his dream, he is drowning. I can feel it—the terror radiating from his small body like heat from a furnace. His heartbeat is a drum. His breath is a thread about to snap. I want to help him. I want to wake him up. I want to flip him over. But the blanket is pulled tight. And the rule is absolute.

As if it was there to remind me that I was an unlucky person right from the start. What other word could I use to describe my life? I lost both parents ten years ago, as if it was karma for what they had done to the boy who had been the main character of my nightmares for more than a decade.
