There was a chair across from him, and the second I sat, I felt his eyes on me like he was waiting to see if I’d flinch.
“You always walk in like the air belongs to you,” he said. “Even now.”
I didn’t answer.
He smiled slightly. “It’s why I like you, you’re like a flame wrapped in silence. Tell me, Zoey, do you know how to play chess?”
“No.”
“You should,” he said. “It’s the game of kings and of wars.”
I stayed quiet.
Viktor studied the board like it was a mirror. “The king,” he said, lifting the piece, “is the most important, but the weakest. He can only move one square at a time. He’s slow and predictable.” He placed it back down. “Like Graham.”
