Death had claimed me again. At least once a week, I endured these horrendous night terrors. Without seeing them, I could sense my Elysian guardians. Nyx, my white guardian lion, walked over to check on me. I extended one hand to massage his head through the mane of his hair as he huffed, inquiring about my mental status. While my guardian bald eagle, Zuzu, sat on her perch stand observing the interaction. Finally, my delusional brain caught up with my chagrin reality.

"Their patrols have been concentrated on the northern border since the incident at Winterfell. They are expecting an attack from that direction." "They are expecting an attack from the direction I want them to expect." I said, turning back to face him. "What about the wizard? Has he sent word about the ritual?" "Not yet. He said he would need three nights to prepare. Tonight is the second night." Two nights ago, Aetos had begun the ritual to upgrade Adrian's curse. The wizard had found a way to trigger the beast without a full moon, to reach through the twin bond that connected us and twist it into something that would make my brother lose control at any time, not just when the moon was high

So this wizard standing in front of us is actually a second command to whoever the leader of his coven might be? "Then what the living fuck is he doing here by this time?" I find myself asking, and Damon turns his head to look at me with a raised eyebrow. "Are you seriously asking me that question? Has everything I've been explaining to you not gotten into your head? He is a supernatural creature, and supernatural creatures operate mostly at night. Haven't you gotten that?" he asks. We are interrupted from our discussion when a very sharp greenish light erupts from the fellow's outstretched hand toward both of us.

I sit up, smiling at him, and he gives a slight smile, "Sleep," I murmur, and he's out like a light just like that. I shake my head, still contemplating bathing, but I'm comfortable lying atop him. I must have fallen asleep because I woke up to darkness. The wraiths are surrounding us, whispering and hissing their unclear words. I scramble off him, jumping off the bed and backing away until my back hits the wall. They become one, transforming into a tall, faceless man-monster made of dark smoke, with long limbs, arms, and legs, towering over me. As its mouth opens wide, it hisses in my face. A roar rips through the room, and a lion cub, slightly bigger than the leopard cub that appeared last

But enough. Kaelric’s voice cracked through the corridor like thunder. “You have two minutes to identify yourself. Or else.” “That won’t be necessary, prince.” The wizard's voice was calm, too calm. “He can’t hide in darkness.” He raised both arms. His lips moved fast. Ancient words spilled out like venom. “Radahnus enrako benetera! Radahnus enrako benetera…” My gaze darted to the sconces. No. He was summoning the flames back.

It looked like a man wearing a long coat and a hat, but his face was covered in shadows. And his eyes... were two glowing red slits. "WHO ARE YOU?!" I took a fighting stance, golden light starting to gather in my hands. The figure smiled, revealing sharp teeth. "We are... The Order of Nightmares. We have been waiting... for the Star Child to wake up." He raised his hand. "NIGHT FALL!" Suddenly, the world around me twisted! The park disappeared! I was no longer standing on grass. I was standing in an endless dark void!

The boy is having a nightmare. I want to help. I want to wake him up. I want to flip him over so his nose is not in the pillow. But I couldn't do anything. I have been watching him for forty-one nights. His mother tucks him in at eight-thirty. She reads one story—always the one about the rabbit who gets lost and finds his way home. She kisses his forehead. She turns on the star-shaped nightlight. She closes the door, but leaves it open just a crack so the hallway light spills in like a promise.

“And a part of you wants to play too—just to see if you can beat me.” He turns his face toward mine, a challenge glinting in his eyes. Then he steps back and I can breathe again. “Why would I play a game with you when I am at a disadvantage?” I say. “I do not know the rules, nor the prize.” “No. But don’t you want to find out?” He holds out his hand. My mother used to tell me stories about Night—the deity who holds the keys to the Moon Goddess’s prison. He tempts mortals into making deals with him, offering them what they desire in exchange for their souls.

' Without a word, the Naiad smiled in response, the sight of those tiny, sharp teeth sending goose-bumps over my skin. Stepping closer, she raised her arms, palms downwards, thin fingers splayed, and she began to whisper words that I couldn't make out. Over and over again she chanted, the incessant whispering sounding like the whistle of wind through the trees or brushing against the windowpane. I felt it before I saw it, a vibration in the floor that juddered through me, and then, a light that appeared all around us, as if it was coming up through the monochrome tiles. When her whispering stopped, so did the vibration and what was left, was three circles of white light, all linked together
