An hour later, they were crammed into Julian’s old, dented hatchback. It was a small, dark vehicle that looked completely out of place next to the Alarcón fleet. Mateo sat in the passenger seat, his long legs cramped against the dashboard. They drove through the narrow, unlit streets of Madrid's lower district, far away from the sparkling lights of the financial sector. The air here smelled of damp stone, diesel fumes, and cheap tobacco.
