Astrid’s POV Asha’s scowl deepened, and her knuckles also turned white as she gripped her armrest tightly. Sparks of rage flickered and danced in her eyes, casting an almost unnatural glow upon her features as rage coursed through her. “How dare you try to justify Astrid’s actions by using the trauma she had endured!” She lashed out at Nova. “Trauma will never be an excuse to hurt others!” she spat out, her voice laced with venom. “Astrid made a choice to lash out, and that choice was wrong — unforgivable, even. I tried to zone out like usually would on any other given day. When it happened the first time, I was traumatized. Dane looked at me, studying me, trying to see a lie with what I said. “If she was, she would have told me,” Dane vouched, “no she wouldn’t. You have traumatized her so much, she wouldn’t tell anyone.” He explained with anger.

Sophie nodded slowly, not rushing me, the patient stillness of someone trained to let people finish their own thoughts. “But,” I continued, “I also think I’m the most myself I’ve ever been. Which is strange to say about a month that nearly destroyed everything.” I wrapped both hands around my mug. “I think trauma either breaks you completely or it strips away everything that wasn’t actually load-bearing in who you are. I got lucky. Mine stripped away the load-bearing stuff and showed me what was actually underneath.” “What was underneath,” Sophie said quietly. I thought about it.
