A lot of stories use it as a shortcut for explaining why magic exists, which can feel lazy if not done well. But when it's done right, the dragon isn't just a power source; it's a character with motives, even if it's asleep. Is it benevolent, indifferent, or actively malevolent? Do civilizations worship it, fear it, or try to harvest its power? That central tension between mortal societies and the primordial entity that literally made them defines everything from religion to politics. I'm always more interested in the cults that spring up around such a being than the beast itself.

Trying to pin down 'dragon origin' stories feels like chasing smoke sometimes, because the concept means something different in every subgenre. My mind immediately goes to Anne McCaffrey's 'Dragonriders of Pern' series, which is the absolute blueprint for sci-fantasy dragon biology. It treats dragons as a genetically engineered species, created by colonists to fight a parasitic threat. The details about telepathic bonds and threadfall are so meticulously worked out it feels like real xenobiology. That's one end of the spectrum.

On the completely opposite side, you have something like Naomi Novik's 'Temeraire' series, which drops dragons into the Napoleonic Wars as an accepted, if prestigious, part of the natural world. Their origins are more shrouded in myth there, part of the fabric of that alternate history. So 'origin' can mean scientific creation myth, historical integration, or an in-world puzzle to solve.

It's more of a vast, incomprehensible force than a literal fire-breathing lizard, but it fits the 'creator myth' bill in a really interesting, abstract way. Makes me wonder if the 'dragon as creator' idea is evolving beyond traditional fantasy.
