I kicked the door shut and guided Julian to the bed.
Calling it a "bed" was generous. It was a sagging twin mattress on a rusted metal frame, pushed into the corner of the ten-by-ten room. Julian collapsed onto it, the springs let out a long, agonizing screech that filled the tiny space. He looked around, his eyes glazed and unfocused, taking in the peeling floral wallpaper, the single hot plate on a warped wooden desk, and the stack of library books holding up the lopsided wardrobe.
