Of course, Gurvon Gyle looms over everything as the antagonist—calculating, patient, and terrifyingly competent. The dynamics between these four create most of the tension.

I've seen a lot of theories float around about the big reveal in 'Scarlet Tides', but for me it wasn't about a sudden secret identity or a hidden mastermind. It's a slower burn, the kind that rewires your understanding of the first book completely. You spend the whole of 'The Stormcaller' assuming the magic system works a certain way, that the Tide Lords' powers are this untouchable, elemental force.

Then you get deeper into the second book and it clicks—the whole 'tides' are a cycle, sure, but it's less about natural ebb and flow and more about a deliberate, parasitic reset. The twist is that the magic itself is the cage, not the key. It feeds on the world in a way that ensures no civilization ever gets strong enough to break the cycle of the Lords returning. That realization, watching a character piece it together, hits harder than any sudden betrayal.

Scarlet Tides' definitely got the digital treatment after 'The Tainted Cup' reignited interest in Robert Jackson Bennett's catalog. I remember hunting for the audiobook a couple summers back and it was trickier to find than I expected, not on Audible at the time. I ended up reading the ebook on Google Play Books; the formatting was decent. Honestly, the sequel to 'City of Stairs' is such a dense, political fantasy that I'm not sure an audiobook would do it justice unless the narrator nailed all those divine and bureaucratic nuances. I imagine it exists now given the demand, but I haven't checked recently.

Your library's OverDrive might be the best first stop, that's where I borrowed the ebook from. If you're coming off the first book, I'd say just grab the ebook and power through. The plot gets so intricate with the continental trade politics that you'll want to control the pace yourself, flipping back to check those maps and Dramatis Personae.
