From beyond the horizon, black tendrils of energy spread, snaking over the land like living storm clouds. The Shadow’s master had arrived—not alone, but with an army of creatures formed from pure darkness, moving with terrifying intelligence and precision. Kael pointed toward the horizon. “They’re testing us. The Shadow’s master is analyzing our defenses, learning our formations. Every second we hesitate, they adapt.”

"How can you sleep so peacefully with a stranger in your house?" He noticed the way her hair fell over her face like a curtain of silky locks. The dim light of the moon streaming through the window casted a glow on her smooth, unblemished skin. He watched as her chest rose with each breath she took and how the thin fabric of her gown barely concealed the gentle curves of her body.

Emma froze, her heart pounding as the shadows in the chasm began to rise. “What now?” Jamie muttered, gripping his skateboard tightly. The shadows coalesced into towering forms, their shapes shifting and undefined. Eyes like burning coals appeared within the darkness, fixing on the group with a malevolent intensity. “Manifestations,” Callan said, their voice calm but firm. “The force is sending its echoes to stop us.” The first shadow lunged upward, slamming into the bridge with a force that sent shockwaves through the stone. The group staggered, struggling to keep their footing.

No signature, just one word. “If he stays, you fall.” And then I realized— The person in the shadow was closer than I thought.

Darkness fell across the realm as the Shadow Knight approached the capital's inner districts. Stars appeared in patterns reflecting the constellations visible within his midnight armour, cosmic forces aligning as if in recognition of the approaching reckoning. Throughout the provinces, something unprecedented was occurring with mechanical precision. The Night of Long Shadows had begun.

My mark burned in answer, pulsing against my wrist like it recognized what approached. Then, through the mist, I saw them. Shadows. Hundreds of them. At first I thought they were wolves dark shapes moving in eerie formation but as they drew closer, I saw what they truly were. Not living. Not dead. Their bodies flickered like smoke, their eyes glowing silver in the dawn. An army of the fallen. The Shadow Alpha’s host. The ground shook as they marched, soundless save for that awful rhythm the low, steady thrum of war drums that seemed to come from nowhere and everywhere at once.

Shade had complete control and I honestly couldn't be any more scared. Shade manipulated the shadows around us so easily. You would think Shade was swinging at the air like a mad person and not weaving shadows to make a net and throw it over Alester. The shadows weighed enough to cause him to fall to the floor with the net above him. I felt him pulling at the darkness that Shade was controlling, but Shade was keeping the shadows sealed shut, refusing to relinquish control. Alester roared a roar I'd only ever heard once before, in my deadliest of nightmares.
