I watched her face warm into a smile and I could not believe my ears. A chuckle escaped my lips and before I knew it, I was laughing and crying at the same time.

Not a prisoner in her own skin. Tears ran down my face anyway. They did not match the smile, and that made my stomach twist. The wrongness of it hurt worse than any nightmare. Smiling while crying. Looking calm while screaming inside. I am here, I wanted to yell. Help me. Someone see me. See past this fake face.

And you couldn't do something so I can know you were there?.” He stood up from the stool, dropped his phone and juice before he walked up to me. “Then it's no fun, I wanted to see that reaction,” he smiled like a child, “And there is it.” I didn't know how it was possible to have contradicting feelings that felt so vivid and real till now, I was smiling so wide inside but I kept a straight face the whole time that his smile almost made me want to touch his face. He looks so cute when he's laughing with misty eyes. Yet I can't touch him.

She was smiling, a real one, the kind that arrived when something was both painful and true simultaneously. "She was always annoying about being right," Calla said. We sat there for a minute, crying and laughing at the same time, tears mixing with smiles, people at the next table glancing over and then politely looking away. It felt ridiculous. It felt good. It felt ridiculous, absurd, like something out of a cheesy movie. It felt good, cathartic, like a weight had been lifted from both of our shoulders.
