Chapter 19 Marco’sPOV I jolted awake on the metal reception chair and flitted my eyes to the neon sign above the operating theatre that indicated where Vvissuta had been undergoing surgery for the last ten hours. That was what I had decided to call the unknown woman Sopravvisuta. It means Survivor and only a survivor could had survived that nasty fall from the top of the mountain.

Not an animal. Not anything Hope had ever seen in a textbook, on a screen, or in a nightmare she could remember after waking. It hit the ground a hundred yards away without sound. Then it lifted its head. And the parking lot screamed back to life in panic. Hope stood before she realized she was moving. Softball instincts didn’t translate into understanding. "I'll be right behind you. I promise." She hesitated, then nodded and stepped through the door. I took one last look at the valley, at the water, the trees, the fog. At the place that had almost killed us a dozen times over. Then I stepped through the door, and the Siren's Valley disappeared behind me. We were back on the bus. Safe. Alive. Or as alive as dead people could be. The intercom crackled. "Congratulations on surviving the Siren's Valley! Current survivor count: seven out of nineteen players. Outstanding!"

I survived the most dangerous and chaotic first three months of the zombie virus outbreak. One morning, the roar of helicopter blades came through the bunker's external microphones, followed by a military loudspeaker broadcast. "Attention all survivors. This is the Southwest Rescue Command rescue team. We have established a safe base. Survivors who hear this broadcast, proceed to the designated assembly point..." I stood up, took off my comfortable loungewear, changed into a black tactical gear and put on a stab-resistant vest. I slid two combat knives into my tactical boots and slung a cocked compound crossbow over my back.

I cursed. WE hurried to the studio and to our surprise we heard her complete the news. Who is the one that survived? From what I can remember James only dropped Tasha here, I liked the old man but for my friend’s sake I wished he wasn’t the one who survived today. “Nathan Dominic was on an accident and the medics confirm only one living patient who is in critical condition and one death.”

"With us four? Not so much. With the rest of them… keep your head down and try to say please and thank you." "Noted." "Fast learner." "Survivor," I fired back. He sighed, his smile slowly fading as did the light behind his blue eyes. "It's fifty-fifty." "What?" I was just popping a piece of cheese into my mouth. Why did the food taste so bland? I was hungry — ravenous — so I didn't care, but it was like eating sandpaper. "The survival rate, of course." Alex examined his fingernails then clicked his tongue. "Most humans are able to survive it, the strong ones."

Then he stood behind her again, his ice blue eyes filled with an aching intense futility Teri’d had no idea was buried inside him. “You’re right, Teri. You aren’t his only survivor. Neither is Zoe.” Jim’s voice was gravelly with raw emotions. “Your parents are still alive, and even if they don’t speak to you, there’s no unseeing what happened to the beautiful daughter, their child, that they raised. It never goes away—it never fades. The doctors and nurses who cared for you until you came home. Me. All of us are survivors too.”
