Ace stood alone as the road curved into silence. Behind him, the woods stirred and then they came. Ten wolves. They were dark, fast, and soulless. Their eyes glowed with that same unnatural light he remembered from his days under control. Midnight Mystery wolves. They were noty just simple wolves but Engineered monsters. He didn’t hesitate. Ace shifted. His silver wolf burst forth in a flash of power and fury. His eyes gleamed violet under the rising moon. He met the first wolf mid-leap and slammed him into the dirt with a bone-breaking crunch.

Wolves stood on the porch, on the stairs, pressed against walls, offering their silent support. This was what a good pack looked like; unified, fierce, protective. Ready to tear the world apart for one of their own. Inside, Milo remained unconscious, breathing shallowly, caught somewhere between life and the dark. But he wasn’t alone. Verina’s wolves fanned out on either side of her, all of them large, dark, with glowing red eyes, crouching down, ready to hurl themselves at my pack. My wolves were equally prepared, stooping low, finding their centers of gravity so they could launch off of the ground and meet any attack midair. Or be the first to strike.

The fight ended in no time. It was a massacre. I now understood why spirit wolves were equated to gods. Helena had single-handedly killed twenty-five evil-looking mutant wolves. I didn't have that kind of capacity. Those wolves had ravaged settlements for almost a year without suffering any casualties, but they had reached the end of their journey.

It’s too late we are already mated and you have lost everything so what is the point of this.” She stepped closer and then motioned her hand. “Because I helped find a way to destroy you.” I followed her hand and now there was a woman dressed in bright red maybe a few years older than me with the brightest red hair I’d ever seen. Her eyes were glowing red. Then as the wolves began to approach I realized they were all red wolves. We had fallen trap the Red Crescent Moon pack! This was the plan and Melina was the wolf who had conspired against us! It was all falling together but it was also too late.

Damn, they behave like normal people, she thought. Even though Pearl had no idea if any of them were female.
