I see it in the way his nostrils flare. However, he just shrugs. “Whatever, man. Welcome to Shadowmire.” He points to a door at the end of the hall. “That one’s empty. Room 317. Get settled before the RA does rounds.” He walks away without looking back. I stand in the hallway with my every nerve screaming. The empty door stands before me. I push open Room 317. It is small. Three beds, three desks, and a narrow window overlooking the driveway. My hands shake as I close the door behind me.

Chapter: 50 ****** TALON: As I entered my room, the familiar scent enveloped me like a warm embrace. The walls, adorned with memories, seemed to whisper stories of my past. My small, modest space—one I had called home since I was fifteen. I was a boy, uncertain and lost, but now I stood as a man, carrying the weight of decisions and responsibilities. Yet, as I looked around, I couldn't shake the feeling that, despite the years that had passed, nothing had truly changed.

My footsteps slowed. Something about this place felt familiar. Bobby stopped before a heavy wooden door. He pushed it open. "This is where you'll stay." I looked inside. The room was small. Barely large enough for the narrow bed pressed against one wall. A wooden table. One chair. A tiny cabinet. One small window sat high above the bed, letting in only a thin strip of moonlight. Cold air drifted through cracks in the stone. My fingers slowly tightened around the little cloth bag I still carried.

“The money he gave us barely covers your food and training lessons.” The feeling that something is not quite right returns to me. “It’s better than nothing,” I say and enter. Anan follows me. The house—while small, is clean—consists of a kitchen and a room with two beds. The book and letters on one of them tell me I have a roommate. I put my duffle bag on top of what I assume is my bed. “Let me show you the rest of the village.”

Claire demanded, hurrying after us. He did not even spare her a glance. We passed through a living room furnished with a couch and two chairs, skin rugs scattered across the floor, and a compact adobe fireplace that made the space feel deceptively cozy. A narrow corridor led off the room. Two doors faced one another; a third stood at the end of the hall between them. He opened that one and motioned me inside. The room was small and dim. A single bed. A scarred table with a lamp. A tiny bureau holding a pitcher and basin. One large window, shuttered tight. Dust hung in the air. For one terrible second I wondered if the shutters had been nailed closed.

Beginning. Not ending. --- I walked until evening. Found a hotel. Cheap. Clean. Asked for one night. Maybe more. The clerk asked for a name. I paused. "Yan," I said. He typed. Didn't ask for more. Didn't ask which Yan. What Yan. Just gave me a key. Room 217. I climbed stairs. Opened door. Empty. White. Bed. Desk. Window. I sat on the bed. Opened the window. Let in city noise. Real air.
