Alex’s breath stuttered. His body trembled with anger, need, both at once. His fists clenched at his sides.
Marcus leaned in, lips almost brushing his. Close enough Alex could taste the wine on his breath. Close enough to feel the choice burn in the back of his throat.
“You’ll prove your loyalty soon,” Marcus whispered. “But for now—get some rest.”
Then he pulled back, walking away down the hall, leaving Alex alone with the night and the glittering city.
