F*ck, I’m doomed! **********

I couldn’t see the reasons for his change in behavior, but I didn’t feel unsafe, so I didn’t question it too much for the time being. Our ride into the nearest city was uneventful, and we reached it as the last of the light was draining from above. I’d yet to see the sun, but the sky still brightened to a gunmetal gray, the brilliant beams of energy being trapped in the ash filled clouds. To date, I had experienced aspects of the fallout from the bombs through the weather, and I’d already seen variations in what I’d known of the climate preceding the apocalypse.

I get to the foyer, where the three staircases meet and lead down into the main entrance, and there's no escape. Past the grandiose chandelier, down at the bottom of the staircase are no guards but wrought iron seals. There are three seals, spinning on the front door, softly pulsing blue. I rub my lips, upset, still in anticipation of tasting more Ray, upset that there is something I can't get past. I can at least try. I quickly look behind me, and dash down the stairs, lifesaver underneath my arm, my present in my left hand, and look down, careful not to trip. I'm sweaty and flushed, nervous because I am so close.

Tasha: Are you okay? I frowned. Me: Yeah. Why? Three dots appeared. Then disappeared. Then it appeared again. Tasha: I just… saw the news. My stomach dropped. I already knew what “the news” meant. Lake’s confession had gone viral overnight. His past, his mistakes, his growth, all laid bare for the world to dissect like vultures over a carcass. Some people praised his honesty. Others dragged him through the mud like he was some kind of criminal mastermind instead of a flawed human who’d grown.

Before she said anything, she bowed apologetically toward the camera. Then, with a teary expression, she said, "First, I'd like to sincerely apologize to Max Campbell's family. I misread the label on the drug vial and accidentally gave Max the wrong drug. While I admit to my wrongdoings, there's also something else I'd like to address today." She continued, "This matter has been weighing on my chest for some time now, and I believe the public deserves to know the truth. When I noticed that Max was suffering from an allergic reaction, I wanted to inform the doctor so they could take the steps necessary to save his life.

When it suddenly starts to feel like I am climbing the ladder again and I’m finding happiness and peace of mind, something just happens that makes me want to give up. I’m scared of failing. I’m scared of turning wayward. I’m scared of losing Dr. Dane. “What if Steve can reach him and disclose everything that’s happened in Elitis High to him? What if he ends up hating me and is unwilling to help anymore?” Tears dropped from my eyes and I picked up my phone to reply to Bryan’s countless messages. “Forget about it,” I texted back, but he wasn’t active. In a short time, his message dropped.
