I look back at the book in my hands, trying to ignore the blonde Goddess that is standing in the middle of my bedroom. Mia glances in my direction and she begins to chuckle under her breath. "Is that a good book?" She asks me between her giggles. "It's great," I say a little too cheerfully. "You are holding it upside down," Mia says with a smirk on her face. "Holding what upside down?" I ask stupidly. "The book," Mia giggles. "You are holding it upside down." Looking down at the book, it is upside down. Slamming the cover shut, I place the book on the table in front of me. "Are you ready for bed?"

He insisted on going there with me, so I let him. I spent hours going from one book about magic to the next. There was no other way to describe what was happening. It was magic, simple. “What are you doing?” I heard Alpha Moretti call out, making me jump in my skin. I slammed the book I was holding closed, although there wasn't any need for that considering the numerous books that were sprawled out on the table with their titles on display. His eyes settled on the biggest book there, and my cheeks burned in embarrassment. “The Art of Magic,” the topic read.

Precise. He catalogued everything. I set it aside and pull another: Warding and Containment Magic: Vol. II. Inside, diagrams of sigils, instructions for layering defenses, notations on what energies can and cannot be sealed. I recognize one ward Khael showed me. Others are unfamiliar—older, harsher, drawn with urgency. There are books about energy alignment. One on Hollow geography post-curse. Another on lunar magic and its ties to fertility. But none of them are what I need.

It was hand written. She went on, flipping the book and stopping to read through some parts of it. It was a book about spells and she found herself laughing at the silliness of the thought that magic was still in existence. Some of the spells in the book made Matilda to shake her head and conclude that the book had been written during the time that witches existed. Some of the recipes in the book had ingredients like a two day old crow's blood, the crushed bark of a cider tree, four leaved clovers, mint leaves that had bloomed in the summer and many other bizarre ingredients.

Elaine spoke the words down into the glass; the magic seemed to hear her, and as she gave a tug, the lid lifted. The book beneath the glass peered through Elaine. The volumes’ binding was smooth leather, and the stitching was gold. Long, smooth letters were intricately painted across the front, and her hand brushed them softly. It was the most precious book in the world. Reaching down, she pulled it out and flipped to the page she desired. There it was in thick black letters, the word luck. The pages of the book were filled with names and places, a guide to every gifted being in the land. It was centuries old and was only written on by the top magistrate himself, the king’s second in command

I quickly glance back down at the page trying to seem uninterested in his god-like physique before his voice rings out. “You know Firefly.” His voice rings out. I keep my head down and try to sound uninterested, “Hmm?” I see him start to walk towards me in my peripherals, “Just so you’re aware. Your book is in fact. Upside down.” he retorts, coming to a stop right next to me. I blink and really look at the page for the first time to see that it was in fact upside down. My face heats up in embarrassment. “Go one keep reading, don’t let me stop you.” he says with a smile. “Maybe that’s one of your many powers. Upside down reading.”

” Sofia rose from the table and went into the other room, “Follow me.” I rose and joined her in the next room, which was packed floor to ceiling with shelves of books. “I hate to see you stuck between your word and your destiny.” She said, cryptically, placing a few musty-smelling books in my arms. “Let’s postpone your decision until you’re more sure of your own mind, shall we? Take these, look them over. They will help you understand more of how to use your magic.” I looked at the titles of the books curiously. ‘Under a Full Moon’, ‘Selene the Blessed’, ‘To Ride A Wild Hunt’, and one enigmatic tome titled ‘Panacea Obscura”.

The next few lines read, "In addition to straightforward directions and explanations of Blood Magic, this tome includes cautionary tales about those who misuse it, both user and object of the spells detailed here. I am recording this information even though I sincerely doubt the decision. The knowledge in this book in the wrong hands could prove most fatal to the Children of Lilith as well as humanity."
