Everything is chaos. A bad omen.

Not again. Ever since she'd turned sixteen, weird, unexplainable things like this had been happening. It had started small, like a puddle of water shifting away from her when she walked near. Or the flame of a candle bending sideways. Grains of sand in the hourglass in her room shaping into a knot. From there, the phenomenon had escalated. An entire tub of bathwater floating, suspended, on the ceiling. Flames from the fireplace streaming a path through her living room, winding like a scarf around her furniture. Soil from her potted plants spelling words out on her kitchen floor.

As the dust settled and we revealed in the peace we had fought so hard to achieve, a new twist emerged, shattering the tranquility we had found. It began with a series of inexplicable events—a string of coincidences that seemed too calculated to be random. Objects moved on their own, whispers echoed through empty hallways, and a chilling presence lingered in the air. We could not ignore the growing sense of unease that permeated our once-idyllic existence.

I shake that thought away and continue with my morning routine, if I stay busy I don’t get those weird headaches. They started when I was 16 and then this weird mark appeared on my arm as well, I have to always take my medication on time which helps. But the times I have forgotten or wanted to see what would happen to me if I didn't take it, well let’s just say that things haven’t ended well. I stand slowly, turning in a circle. Everything about this place is slightly off, and it’s spreading. Not just here. I’ve seen it in three other territories this year alone. Wildlife acting strange, dreams bleeding through into waking hours, hunters going quiet without warning. At first I thought it was coincidence. Maybe even wishful thinking, since I’m always searching for cryptids and spirits.

The room was spotless, as if no one had ever lived there. Only the desk in front of him held a single box. Hugo opened it. Inside were all the gifts he had ever given Katherine. On top of the box, there was a single sticky note. "Three's a crowd. I'm stepping out. I give my best regards to Mr. Laurent and Ms. Mendes—may you have a long and happy marriage, and many children."
