I didn’t react otherwise. She noticed anyway. Of course she did. “Don’t pretend that didn’t hurt.” she murmured. “I’m not pretending.” I said evenly. “I’m managing.” Her mouth curved faintly. Not exactly amused, but close. “Of course you are.” I felt when the needle went in. She didn’t hesitate.Each stitch was quick, efficient, pulling the edges together with just enough pressure to hold without tearing further.

With my fingers, I slowly gathered every shard of the broken opal into a velvet pouch, not even leaving the tiniest speck of powder behind. Once they were all collected, I clutched the pouch tightly against my chest. "Andiamo, Mamma. We're never coming back to this place again."
