"Do you want to make a wish under the tree?" I raised an eyebrow at her mischievous grin. “Are you seven?” Addy laughed, her eyes twinkling with excitement. "Come on, Mia! It's Christmas Eve. Let's make a wish just for fun." I couldn’t help but smile at her infectious enthusiasm. "Fine, let's do it." We made our way through the crowd towards the towering Christmas tree, its colorful lights illuminating the night sky. Standing beneath its branches, surrounded by other cheerful visitors, I closed my eyes and silently made a wish in my heart.

She hands me a new white sheet paper and I collect it with trembling hands and she returns to her seat. I wipe the tears running down my face away and I quickly write down the question and proceed to try to answer it. The question was difficult because I didn't do anything for the last Christmas as I spent it at home being afraid of when my uncles would be coming home and whenever he got back home from work, he'd use my body to get his satisfaction. But still, I let my imagination wander and I try to write down a perfect Christmas, better than the last one I had.

After Thanksgiving, it was open season in Greer’s house for decorating and everything Christmas. “Let’s make it Friday,” I said. “I brought gifts with me for the kids, but I’d like to get a few more. Also, we can do things like sing Christmas carols, drink hot chocolate … the works!” “Okay. This is getting a bit too much for me,” Brett said, getting up to get himself another glass of iced tea. “Gifts? Yes. Caroling? No.” I smiled. “What’s the matter, Brett?” I teased. “Too much music for you?”

Yawning, I excused myself to go to bed. Opening the new journal, I took out a pen. ‘Dear Luigi,’ I wrote. ‘It’s Christmas Eve. Well, technically Christmas Day now. The Santa presents are piled under the tree. The stockings are stuffed. The kiddos are asleep.” I exhaled a long breath, biting back a tear. “And I’m missing you more than ever.”
