Clarinda Buenavista knows her place: in the kitchen, at the edges of the grand Harrison estate, serving the man who holds her family’s fate in his hands. When her mother’s illness and mounting debts force her to sign on as live-in maid for Yael Harrison, she expects nothing but hard work and quiet obedience. Yael is the cold, reclusive billionaire who rules his empire—and his home—with iron discipline, still trapped in grief over the woman he lost. But as days turn into weeks, the line between master and maid begins to blur. Clarinda sees the man beneath the power: the loneliness he hides, the pain he never speaks of, the small kindnesses he tries to deny. Yael, in turn, finds himself watching for her, craving her quiet warmth, and realizing she has become the only light in his silent world. Whispers spread fast. Yael’s family and social circle are quick to judge: Clarinda is just a maid, a nobody who has no business stepping into their world. His half-sister Mara makes it clear she will do anything to tear them apart. When duty, status, and old grief threaten to separate them forever, both must choose: stay bound by the rules that have always defined them… or dare to cross the line between duty and desire, between the kitchen and the master’s bedroom, and between two worlds that were never meant to collide. What began as a transaction might just become the only love worth fighting for—if they are brave enough to let it. The line has always been clear: She serves. He rules.

Chapter 1

BEHIND THE HIGH WALLS

The heavy iron gates of the Harrison Estate swung shut behind me, and for a long moment, I just stood perfectly still, clutching my small, worn bag tight against my chest. My fingers dug into the frayed fabric, grounding me as the reality of where I was truly settled in. This was it. The place I had prayed would take me in. The job that would keep my family afloat, that would stop the bills from piling up, that would keep my brother’s dream of college alive.

Mrs. Reyes, the head housekeeper, met me at the grand oak doors. She was sharp-eyed and stern, her gray hair pulled back in a tight bun, her movements precise and no-nonsense. But when she looked at me, there was no cruelty in her gaze — only the weariness of someone who had worked hard all her life, too.

We walked past the large, sunlit kitchen and the back hallway where the laundry was strung up to dry, and then she stopped near the wide staircase. That was when I saw him.

 Yael Harrison.

He was standing by the floor-to-ceiling window of the living room, staring out at the sprawling, perfectly manicured gardens that stretched for acres beyond the glass. He was even taller than I had heard, broad-shouldered and imposing, dressed in a crisp white button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing strong forearms dusted with dark hair. His dark hair was slightly tousled, as if he had run his hand through it a hundred times in frustration, and his jaw was set so tight it looked carved from stone. He owned shipping lines that sailed across the ocean, skyscrapers that pierced the sky, businesses that employed thousands of people across the country — yet he lived here all alone, in this vast, silent house, carrying a weight no one else seemed to see.

He nodded once, short and sharp. “Can you cook? Clean properly? Follow instructions without needing to be told twice?”

My heart was hammering against my ribs so hard I thought he might hear it, but I lifted my chin and spoke clearly. "Opo, Sir.

For a split second, something shifted in his expression — a flicker of something softening, something almost like understanding, gone so fast I told myself I must have imagined it.

“Then do it well,” he said simply, his voice deep and steady. “You will be paid every two weeks, sent directly to whoever you choose. Your food and lodging are provided. If you need to leave for an emergency, you will ask permission first. Otherwise — do your work, and keep to your place.”

He turned back to the window, dismissing me as easily as he would brush dust from his sleeve, and Mrs. Reyes led me away down another long corridor, all the way to the back of the house. She opened a door at the very end — a small, modest room, but spotlessly clean. There was a narrow bed with fresh sheets, a small wooden table, a chair, and a window that looked out not at the grand gardens, but at the tall mango tree growing near the back wall. It was nothing fancy, but to me, it felt like a blessing I had never earned.

I did not know then that this house would become more than just a place to work. I did not know that the cold, distant man who owned it would one day look at me not as his maid.

Outside, the sun began to set, painting the sky in streaks of orange and violet that should have been beautiful. But here, inside these high stone walls, I could only hope that this new beginning would not end in more heartbreak — for me, or for the family I was fighting for.
