Chapter 1

작가: Noisy Whispers
When I pulled myself out of the pile of garbage, covered from head to toe in dirt and filth, I realized I had been reborn.

In my previous life, this very day was when everything fell apart.

Jackson Miller, a poor student, had lost his chance at receiving the national scholarship. Consequently, he threatened to jump off the rooftop in despair. I rushed up there without hesitation to save him and risked my life.

Instead of being grateful, he framed me as the one who had pushed him.

Meryl Duncan, the school beauty, who had known me for years, immediately took off her coat and placed it over Jackson's shoulders. Without hesitation, she chose to protect him she cared about the most.

"Adam, I want to believe you, too, but Jackson has always been the kindest and the most honest. He keeps to himself and never causes trouble. If someone hadn't forced him into this, he wouldn't have done something so extreme."

Kara Jensen, who had a crush on me, anxiously checked on Jackson's injuries. She then looked at me with disappointment and accused me of bullying her best friend.

"Adam, I never thought you'd be this kind of person. Just pretend I never liked you, okay?"

They helped Jackson to the infirmary in a hurry, leaving me behind, as I remained covered in wounds from trying to save him.

With no one willing to believe me, I could only turn to Sally Robinson, the professor who had always treated me kindly, hoping she would be able to prove my innocence.

But she didn't even listen to my explanation. Without a second thought, she slapped me across the face.

"I've supported that child for years. Of course I know he'd never lie. He's always worked hard in his studies. If you hadn't stolen his scholarship through such disgraceful methods, he wouldn't have been pushed to the point of ending his life!"

They forced me to kneel and apologize to Jackson, threatening to report me to the administration and ensure I faced disciplinary punishment if I refused.

But I had never done any of those things. I had no reason to admit to something I didn't do. So, I clenched my teeth and refused.

Enraged, they locked me inside an abandoned classroom and ordered me to reflect on my mistakes. I was trapped inside with no way to escape. Days passed as I endured hunger and exhaustion.

Meanwhile, Jackson, the poor student whom everyone believed to be honest and harmless, quietly slipped into the abandoned classroom. Step by step, he cornered me until my back was pressed against the windows.

"I've hated your arrogance for a long time. What makes you think you're better than me? Why must the scholarship be yours? Why do all the beautiful women surround you?

"Why do I always have to follow behind you, picking up whatever's left over? I'm going to take back everything that belongs to me in my own way. Now, die!"

A triumphant smile twisted his face. At last, he showed his true colors. He shoved me from the tenth floor, causing me to hit the ground and die on the spot.

Even after being reborn, the panic and helplessness of falling from such a height still rang like a blaring alarm in my mind. After taking a moment to steady myself, I brushed the dirt off my clothes and climbed out of the garbage pile.

Fortunately, the point of no return had not yet happened. They had only taken Jackson away and gathered around him to comfort him. As for me, they had simply found someone to teach me a lesson.

After thinking it through, I realized that I couldn't waste the second chance at life that fate had graciously bestowed upon me. In this life, I would stay as far away as possible from those who had harmed me.

However, I had only taken a few steps when Meryl found me. Pinching her nose, she looked around at the dark, filthy, damp environment with unmasked disdain.

She glanced at me briefly, then arrogantly remarked, "I'm surprised you can still walk."

The people Meryl sent had been ruthless. They only targeted places where the injuries wouldn't be seen. On the outside, I only looked dirty, but in reality, my entire body throbbed with excruciating pain.

I moved my bruised lips slightly, only to realize that they had already stuck together from the dried blood.

Faced with my silence, she let out a soft sigh.

Sally spoke to me as if nothing terrible had happened between us, or as if the woman who once said cruel things to me in defense of Jackson had never existed. At that thought, rage surged inside me. I silently affirmed to myself ten times, "Be the bigger person."Then I quickly finished the last few bites, stood, and prepared to leave.Sally stopped me, her gaze lingering fervently on my face. "Why do I feel like you've grown distant from me? Are you still mad at me? Or did you hear something from someone else?"It's true that I spoke up for Jackson and helped reduce his punishment, but no matter how wrong he was, it wasn't enough to affect his graduation. If that left a bad taste in your mouth, I can apologize to you on his behalf. Okay?"Anyway, studying abroad and living in a new environment must be difficult to adapt to. I can help you with your coursework and find research papers and references. How does that sound?"I stopped in my tracks. I had to say, Sally knew exactly h

Without giving me a chance to refuse, Meryl followed me back to my rented place. I had no idea what she was planning.I wasn't happy about her showing up unannounced, but in a foreign country where things could get dangerous, I still couldn't bring myself to throw her out onto the streets.Suddenly, Meryl stopped me just as I was about to return to my room. Her expression became slightly awkward."I'm sorry, Adam. Back then, I didn't know you went up there to save Jackson. When I saw him looking so helpless, I instinctively believed him. I wrongly accused you about what happened with him, and I'm sorry."Although I had known her for years, seeing the proud campus belle concede and apologize was something I had never witnessed before. Her attitude was sincere, but unfortunately, my heart no longer stirred. When I needed her trust the most, she actively chose not to stand by my side. Now that I had already swallowed all my grievances and moved on, I finally understood something.I

After arriving at my destination, I spent a few days finding a place to live. Then I applied for a part-time job near the campus to familiarize myself with my new surroundings.During that time, a good friend from back home told me that the footage had been uploaded to the campus forum. Now, everyone was demanding that Jackson be punished."Not getting the scholarship meant he wasn't good enough. He should've accepted it and moved on. Instead, he went up to the rooftop to make a scene. He's seriously disrupting the campus environment and encouraging a terrible attitude!""On top of that, he deliberately hurt someone. Adam Youngblood was clearly trying to save him, yet he shoved him onto the concrete ground and left him covered in injuries. What an ingrate!""I used to be fooled by Jackson's honest and harmless appearance. Turns out, he's twisted inside. I'm never going to associate with him again. I'll avoid him if I see him."After I finished reading the screenshot of comments, m

Meryl came up to me, glaring with her beautiful eyes. "Adam, was pushing Jackson off the rooftop not enough for you? You're tormenting him in a different way now?"What exactly did he ever do to you that makes you go so far just to target him? I truly misjudged you. I even thought that after you agreed to apologize, you were someone willing to turn over a new leaf…"Before she could continue her words, I cut her off and finished her sentence for her. "Let me guess. You're going to say I'm not allowed to leave, and whatever I do, I have to apologize to him and explain everything to the students. Right?"Meryl looked slightly surprised that I had predicted her words so accurately. She nodded and crossed her arms. "I'm glad that you're at least self-aware. I don't need to waste my breath.""Oh," I said, laughing. "Then here's my answer—I'm not doing any of that."Her face turned red with anger, just like Sally's earlier. Deep inside, I was amused. After all the defending they had don

After taking a cab, I arrived at the airport and waited in the departure lounge for my flight. Since I had booked it in a hurry, I could only get a ticket for a flight two hours later.Even so, I couldn't wait to get out of this place. While I was waiting, my phone kept blowing up with texts from my friends."Adam, did you play that video in the auditorium today? You freaked us all out.""As soon as that video ended, Meryl and Kara took off like they'd gone crazy. Jackson also ran after them.""They didn't look good, though. They seemed furious, even. Wait—they're not coming after you, are they?"They were excitedly gossiping about the incident, trying to extract more information out of me. I skimmed through the messages but didn't reply to anyone. Then, I noticed a message from my roommate."Hey, Adam. Professor Robinson seems to be asking around about you. She found out about the exchange program and went to the office. She looked really flustered."My finger paused above the

"No, we do," I said. "We're not that close, after all."Kara's face turned pale. She looked at me in disbelief. "Adam, what are you talking about?"I smiled and walked away without replying to her.The next day, the faculty member in charge of the exchange program informed me that my application had been approved and asked me to sign the paperwork. When I finished and walked out of the office, I ran into Sally. She was dressed in professional attire, paired with high heels. Not only was she a professor at this college, but she was also Mom's distant relative. Thus, our families had always kept in touch. After I started college, she had always taken good care of me—except when it came to Jackson, the student she sponsored. In my previous life, to get justice for Jackson, Sally reported the matter to the administration and requested that I receive the harshest punishment possible. She also called my family. When Mom heard that I had bullied a friend at school, she became so angry
