JASMINE

I lay awake in my bed feeling restless and waiting for death. With my wolf not responding to me and my mate gone, I know in just a little while I will give up the ghost, cause as a werewolf, connecting with your wolf is important, and after finding your mate and you lose him, you can never be whole again.

As I lay in bed, I hear footsteps coming up the stairs, soft and familiar, and I just know it’s either my mother or my best friend, Daisy. They are the only two people who keep trying to make me come out and keep living, but without a will to live, all their effort has been in vain.

“Jasmine, I’ve had enough of this.” My mum's voice cut the silence as she marched into my room, went straight to my window, and opened the blinds. Sunlight flooded the room, and the instant headache and eyeache I felt was cause I’ve been sitting in a dark room for months.

“You are my child and my only child for that matter, I won’t let you fade away or die, not on my watch!” She says, pointing a finger at me in anger.

“ Now you will get up and take a shower while I clean and air out this room. I’m done giving you time to grieve.” She walked over to me and dragged me out of bed. Immediately, she pulled me to my feet, and my legs gave out on me as I had also not stood on my feet for a long time.

My mum quickly grabbed and helped me up. She took me straight to the bathroom, she first combed my hair, then she brushed my teeth. She strips me of clothing and puts me in the tub. She bathes me after she washes my hair.

I'm sitting in front of the dressing table placed in the corner of my room, and my mum is standing behind me, detangling my hair.

“You are so pale and malnourished, and it’s my fault. I should have looked after you even if it's against your wish, I’m so sorry, my baby,” my mum said with tears in her eyes as she dressed me up.

Looking at my mum now made me realize I’ve been too selfish, caring about my feelings and not caring about the feelings of the people around me who love me immensely, and instantly I knew I had to snap out of it and spend the little time I have left with my family.

“Mother dearest,” I said, my voice hoarse.

My mother looks up at me, stunned. “You have no idea how much I missed you calling me that,” my mum said, now full on crying.

“I’m sorry I've been so selfish,” I say, with tears falling freely from my eyes. It was the first time I cried since that night.

“No, my dear, you are not selfish,” my mum said as she pulled me into her arms and gave me a tight hug. “Promise me you will try to get better and live fit yourself, promise me!”

“I promise to live for myself from now on,” I answer, nodding my head.

“Good! Let me go and bring you your favourite food to eat,” my mum said, running out of my room. I know she's eager to go and tell my father the good news that I'm speaking and that soon I will be better.

She returned a few minutes later with my favorite food: grilled cheese chicken Sandwich. Seeing the food made my mouth water and my stomach growl, and I could not wait to take my first bite of the sandwich. I took my first bite, and it felt like I was in heaven. I almost forgot how good it feels to eat.

As a werewolf, we can go a little while without eating or drinking, but going too long without eating or drinking can be deadly for us.

“Slow down, you’ve not eaten for so long, eating fast will make your stomach hurt.” my mum says, taking a seat beside me.

I can see someone peeking into my room, and I know who was at the door. My dad.

“Dad, you can come in,” I say with my mouth full. He walked in slowly, and I felt like he had aged more since I saw him.

“ Jas, how have you been?” His voice breaks as if he were going to cry any moment now.

My parents have always pampered me from childhood to adulthood. They had me late in life, as my mum had difficulty conceiving. I forgot how much they love and cherish me.

As the beta of the pack, my dad has a lot of responsibility and people to care for, but he made sure my mum and I came first before anyone.

I’m very envious of the kind of relationship my parents have, even after they’ve been married for over 30 years. I know the bond between mates makes it impossible not love each other, but their love and bond are different because they loved each other before they found out they were mates.

“Won’t you give me a hug?” I say with my arms open, waiting for him to hug me. I did not realize how much I missed him until I saw him standing in front of me.

He walked into my room and started straight to me to hug me, and I could hear him sniffing, knowing he was trying not to cry.

“Don’t cry, my big baby” I say jokingly, cause my dad has always been a man who does not shy away from his emotions because he wants to be perceived as scary and intimidating like Uncle Allen, our Alpha. I rubbed his back and whispered into his ear how much I missed him.

“ Jas, please promise me you will not do this ever again, promise me you will take care of yourself. I can’t bear to see you like this ever again. It hurts my soul,” my dad says, looking into my eyes.

“ Corey let her finish her food, she’s not running away,” mum says, sniffing cause she had also started crying again.

After I finished my food, my dad invited the pack doctor to come check up on me.

“ Beta, your daughter is fine. She is just malnourished, I will prescribe some drugs and also make a food chart on foods that she needs to eat for her to get better,” the pack doctor said as she put back her medical instruments into her bag before taking a leave.

My dad is going to escort her out of the house, and I know he is going to question her. He came back to my room, and he lingered at the door, not saying a word.

“Why don’t we watch our favorite movie together?” My mum suggest siting on my bed and picking up the remote to play our favorite movie on N*****x. “Corey, come sit.

This moment reminded me of multiple times in the past where the three of us would sit together in my bed at times and watch our favorite movie together. We have watched the movie multiple times together, but it still feels like we are watching it for the first time whenever we watch the movie. Not long into the movie, I fell asleep, knowing that I will sleep till the next day and knowing that a lot of people will be in the house when I wake up in the morning.

Her body stiffens slightly under my hand while unease rolls off her scent.Good.At least I’m not the only one suspicious.“The Alpha King has been searching for you,” the messenger repeats calmly. My aura immediately darkens.“For what reason?” I ask coldly. The messenger finally shifts his attention toward me.“To deliver a royal summons.”Absolutely not.The answer rises instantly inside my head before he even finishes speaking.Jax growls dangerously.“No one takes mate.”The messenger reaches into his coat before pulling out a scroll sealed with black wax and the royal crest of the werewolf kingdom.“The Alpha King requests
