Kaida’s Pov
“Luna, after a thorough test and research, it is concluded that what little Leo has isn’t just a cold or any heart disease but Wolf Heart Disease.” The room fell silent. For a moment, I forgot how to breathe. I swallowed and reached for the result sheet. My fingers trembled as I took it from him, but the words blurred together. I could see the letters, yet I understood nothing, it all looked like jargon. After a while, I gave up reading it and raised my head, “W-Wolf Heart Disease? What do you mean? You said it was just a heart condition. You said it was treatable…” My voice broke, but I forced myself to look at the pack healer. He sighed. The sadness in his eyes said more than his words and my heart sank. “Luna, it is a heart disease. But it’s rare and dangerous. His wolf formed in his heart instead of his lower abdomen. It interferes with his breathing.” He hesitated, then shifted his gaze to the side. My body turned stiff before he even continued. I followed his gaze. Leo sat across the room, swinging his small legs as he waited patiently. His face was as pale as a sheet of paper due to the sickness. “My son..” I muttered silently, “He didn’t know.” My chest tightened. He didn’t know that something inside him was killing him. “All he ever wanted was a happy life,” my thoughts spiralled. “To sleep between his parents. To sit on his father’s shoulders.” Things so small but turn out to be impossible. Alpha Ken had never cared for him since I had birthed him. “At least… at least he deserves to be healthy,” I thought. “So why him?” I felt the crazy urge to scream, to yell at the universe, to question the moon goddess, but the moment I almost lost control of my sanity, little Leo who had been playing suddenly raised his head and gave me a beautiful smile. His smile seemed to stab something inside me. “There has to be a solution,” I said quickly, clinging to that thought. “His sixth birthday is next month. There must be something we can do. I can’t give up!” The healer’s silence stretched too long. “Luna… the young Alpha has only one month left to live. I researched deeply, but there is no cure for this. Unfortunately.” he sighs. One month..?! The words echoed. The paper slipped from my grasp, but I didn’t notice. My hands gripped the edge of the table until my knuckles whitened. One month. I stared at the ceiling with my wide eyes, willing myself not to fall apart. A sharp sting pulled me back. I looked down. Blood dripped from my fingers where my nails had cut into my skin. I hadn’t even felt it. The healer was speaking again, but his voice sounded distant. The world felt muted. I forced myself to stand, my knees weakened, but I steadied myself and stumbled toward Leo. “Mama, are you done? Can we go home now?” His bright smile nearly shattered me. I crouched in front of him. For a second, I just looked at him, like I hoped everything would turn out to be a dream. “Mama?” His beautiful voice turned uncertain. I couldn't help it anymore. My heart pounded and without waiting, I pulled him into my arms and held him tightly. “Mama, are you fine?” “Hmm,” I managed. “Did you get needles too? Like little Leo?” My throat closed. “It must have hurt,” he continued softly. “But the pain will stop. Just the way little Leo got used to the pain.” My body stiffened from the shocking words. And that was when the tears finally fell. Got used to the pain. My five-year-old had learned how to endure suffering. I held him closer. “Yes,” I whispered, my voice shaking. “Little Leo is Mama’s hero.” *** Leo has fallen asleep from exhaustion. I kissed his warm red cheek and watched him breathe. Earlier, he had waited by the window again — hoping his father would return. When he finally realised Alpha Ken wasn’t coming, he had only nodded quietly but I could still see the pain in those little eyes of his that were only meant to smile. That quiet disappointment hurt more than tears would have. I sucked in a large amount of air, then brushed my fingers through his hair and stepped out of the room. Standing by the window, I stared into the darkness before dialling a number I rarely called. It rang. And rang, just like always. On the final attempt, someone answered. “Hello.” Relief flickered in my chest and my eyes lit up with desperation. “Alpha Ken, I—” “Sorry, Luna. The Alpha is busy with the pack elders. Call later.” The light in my eyes died down the second I heard the familiar voice—The Beta. My grip tightened around the phone. I pursed my lips, and before I could insist, a familiar, sweet laughter echoed faintly from the background. I froze. My eyes widened in shock. I knew that laugh. Audrey. Even if I were dying, I would recognise it. So this was the “meeting.” My son was counting his days, and his father was with his first love. Her laughter made my tummy churn with disgust, and my hand that held the phone shook with so much anger that the phone almost slipped. “Meeting..? How funny.” I gritted, but even if I had the urge to puke from the disgust I felt, I held it down. Leo still needs me. “I don’t care who he is with,” I thought. “I will fulfil Leo’s wish.” Before the Beta could hang up, I spoke firmly. “Beta Joel, I can hear the laughter there and I know Ken is there. Tell him to speak to me now, or I’ll come to the pack office myself and I’ll make a big scene!” Silence followed. I could almost imagine his stunned expression. I had never challenged the Alpha before. I had always endured. Always stayed quiet even when pushed to the wall. Even when he accused me wrongly and hated me. But not this time as I won't allow this! I heard footsteps approaching and the next thing I knew, the phone shifted hands. “Kaida,” his familiar voice growled through the line, cold and dangerous, “Can you be any more shameless? How dare you threaten me? Are you that desperate to have me—” For the first time, his words didn’t hurt me. It didn't hit home at all and all I felt was hope—He finally picked up the call. “Can you come home?” I interrupted calmly. “Your son needs you. He doesn’t have much time left.” “What?!”Kabir Pov The faint cracking sound echoed through the silent meeting room. No one moved. Every pair of eyes landed on the guard’s neck and even breathing became careful, as if the next sound would be his neck snapping. My eyes remained on Old Man Alaska. I watched his face turn darker and paler. His eyes remained on my fist, and his body trembled. My lips curled slightly like a devil about to steal a soul. Well, I wasn’t far from that because with one move, the one in my hand could die. The guard I was holding struggled. His breathing became thin, and his eyes turned white. I didn’t even look at him. Instead, I watched the way Old Man Alaska slowly lost his mind. His face twisted, and he gritted his teeth. Seconds passed. Then another… Impatience flashed in my eyes, and without even looking at him, I turned to the face of the man I had captured. My eyes turned cold as my fingers tightened, but just as I prepared to snap his neck, I heard a loud yell— “Stop! Okay, okay, I’ll pay
Kabir Pov The next day, I quietly left the bed without waking Kaida up. I knew how tired she was, especially after going through a scare yesterday and even shifting to her wolf form, which wasn’t really advisable for a pregnant mother until she was stable.Yesterday, Mother had scolded Kaida for shifting. Though I didn’t have the heart to say anything harsh to her, I had seriously warned her. Besides, this was also my fault. For her not to trust and rely on me, then I hadn’t gained all of her trust. I still had work to do on our relationship. After dressing up, I looked at Kaida, who was still in a deep sleep. She hugged a pillow, which I had sneaked into her arms so she wouldn’t wake up after I left.I stood there for another second, wondering if I should stay beside her a little longer. In the end, I let out a quiet sigh. Work couldn’t wait.Looking at her parted lips letting out cute little snores, my eyes softened. Though I could hear the sound of footsteps outside, I still leane
Kabir PovThe office fell into a tense silence. The temperature around me dropped as I stared straight at Jude, who still stood there stunned.Benson, on the other hand, looked so confused. His head shifted between Jude and me, his lips parted like he really wanted to ask questions, but he swallowed back his words.I had always trusted Jude, and never for once doubted him even after I knew about his feelings for Rana and that he was hiding his grievance for me. I knew he blamed me for the death of Rana even if it wasn’t all my fault.Rana had been the one who jumped behind me even when I could have easily avoided the arrow. But still, I hadn’t protected her, so I carried the guilt for years and even tolerated the Alaska family’s nonsense and turned them from poor to being one of the wealthiest families. For Jude, even after what happened weeks ago, which I punished him for, I still tried to retain my trust in him, even if I was disappointed. But… seeing Michelle today? How could I not
Kabir Pov I have always known the woman I chose was strong. Even after going through so much heartbreak, she still remained strong and was still able to smile. The first time I met Kaida, it had only been a coincidence. I had heard of the recent chaos caused by the leftover rogues, and I decided to trail their scent and clean them up, and that was when I saw her… lying in a pool of her blood and just waiting for death. My chest tightened as that memory flashed through my mind again. I never cared about people, especially strangers, but I didn’t know what pushed me to interfere that night. Not only did I kill off the rogues, I had even done the unexpected by bringing her back to my pack. Day after day, I watched her, even lied to her when I saw the will to leave in her eyes. I had forced her to stay with the threat that she had trespassed into my territory. I had seen how weak she was, and for the first time, a female’s tears didn’t irritate me. Instead, they caused panic in my he
Kaida Pov In the middle of the crowd lay a figure groaning in pain after being thrown hard onto the ground. Dressed in a black dress, her long hair, which had always been packed neatly, now lay scattered around her head. Though in pain, she still glared fiercely at the crowd, but what attracted attention was the scar that had destroyed her face—the scar stretched from her forehead to her lips, making her look terrifying. But even if her face was destroyed, I could still recognize her anywhere. My breath caught in my throat. I blinked once, then twice, unable to believe my eyes. Michelle Alaska! What is she doing here?! Besides, how could she be so bold as to cause trouble in the Northern Pack?! Just thinking of how much trouble she had caused, ruining what was supposed to be peaceful, made me feel fire burn inside me. I glared at her, my fists clenched tightly by my sides. The whole place was still quiet, and everyone stared at Michelle in shock. No one could have expecte
Kaida Pov My body trembled heavily, and for a moment, I couldn’t come back to my senses and could only stare blankly into the air. The whole place had long fallen into loud silence, and all eyes turned to me. Once in a while, some came back to their senses and exclaimed. I even saw the gazes around me change to ones of disgust, and it sent chills down my spine. My ears rang loudly, and for a second, I forgot how to breathe. It felt as if those words had turned into countless sharp needles piercing my heart. Just then, I felt the temperature around me drop. My heart began to thump heavily, and even my wolf felt the pressure that fell. I snapped back to my senses, then immediately turned to where the pressure was coming from—It was Kabir. The moment I set my eyes on him, my heart tightened. He stood still, his face dark with rage, his eyes bloodshot, and his breathing heavy as if he was about to spit fire. I could even see the veins that bulged from his forehead and neck as if he
Kaida Pov In the room provided by the hospital. I sat with my back resting against the wall. My eyes stared blankly at the snow that continued to fall from the sky. I can’t even remember what day or time it is. I had just regained consciousness minutes ago and I wished I hadn’t woken up. Eve
Kaida Pov“Mama, do you think Papa would come home as he promised?”My hand paused on Leo’s head. For once, I couldn’t say the usual words. It had been days since the last argument. Tomorrow was the pack’s first snow festival… and Leo’s sixth birthday.Little Leo stared at me with so much hope.“Pa
Kaida Pov “What do you want, Audrey?” I swirled to address the person behind me. Who else would it be if it's not the one true love of my husband—Audrey Stanley? She stood in front of me proudly as if she had won, or maybe she had. Her eyes that glared at me contained the usual mockery which I
Kaida Pov “Mama!” I twirled around at the excited call of my son, and a smile bloomed on my face as I watched him run towards me with a carved toy in his hand.“See, Mama. Papa carved little Leo.” He giggled excitedly as he showed me the toy that looked like him.I smiled gently and nodded and ju
