Travis

"There's someone in coach's office." Sammy's brows were furrowed.

I raised a brow. "So what?"

He shrugged. "I don't know, man. I have a bad feeling about it. Have you heard anything at all, cause I heard that_"

"Yo, cap." Another teammate called, cutting Sammy off. "The coach wants to see you in his office. Asap."

"Sure." I called back, before glancing over at Sammy. "Wonder what he wants."

A shrug was his only response, and so I made my way out of the noisy locker room. The season had only just begun, and so far we had had one disastrous game, but I knew we could turn it around. We were making it to the finals come hell or high water.

The team was good, and there were a lot of solid players. We just lacked... Something. And I wasn't sure what that something was.

Blowing out a breath, I raised my hand to knock on the door, but the door swung open before I could. I froze as my eyes met startling blue ones. The guy had tussled blonde hair, a jawline that could cut glass and had about an inch or two on me. He was also dressed down in a simple sweatshirt and holey jeans.

He regarded me coolly for a second before one corner of his mouth ticked up into a smirk.

Before I could make sense of his reaction, he walked past me, shoulder bumping painfully into mine.

"Hey watch it dude." I hissed, stepping out of his way.

The guy huffed, but didn't bother looking back. Annoyed, I marched into the coach's office and let the door slam behind me.

"Moore, you're here. Good. I thought you should be the first to know." Coach Warren steepled his fingers together in front of him. "When I officially break the news to the team, I need you to make sure there's no protest and you'll help make the transition as smooth as possible."

My eyebrows climbed up my hairline. "What are you talking about?"

His gaze shifted over my shoulder for a second. "You met the new guy at the door. What do you think? "

My stomach suddenly cramped, a bitter taste filling my mouth. "Excuse me? New guy? W-what do you mean? "

"I mean exactly what I've just said, Moore. He's replacing Neal Matthews." He informed me. "His team met us and asked if we would like to buy him. It was perfect timing with the loss of Matthews."

"We haven't lost Neal. I_"

"The kid is talented." Coach Warren continued as if I hadn't spoken. "A little bit rough around the edges, but nothing a good team can't brush out. I've seen him in action. He's like a godddamn ballerina on ice. I have no idea how he ended up on a backwater team like The Red Rogers."

My jaw fell open. "You brought A Red Rogers to our team? Coach, no offence, but that team hasn't seen a single international game since I was born. They're a joke! I can't believe you're_" I trailed off, trying to collect my thoughts. Plus, the look on the older man's face was a clear warning to watch my mouth.

I took a deep breath and tried again. "How long is Neal going to be away?"

"The managing board is still deciding that." He leaned back in his chair. "Best case scenario is that Matthews is let back after a suspension, but will have to be benched for the rest of the season, a good case scenario is that he's traded. Worst case scenario unfortunately, is that his entire career goes down the drain."

"They can't do that!" I snapped.

"He made his bed, now he has to lie in it."

My fingers clenched into fists on my lap. I could feel my nails breaking the skin of my palm, but I didn't care. "He's just going through a little rough patch."

"If that's what you call assaulting fans right there in the stadium, then sure, it's just a little rough patch." Coach spat. "We're damn lucky we're not being sued down to the last hair on our head. Matthews needs to learn a lesson, but while he's at it, I can't leave the team crippled."

"But_"

"That's all, Moore." His voice turned hard. "I didn't bring you here to discuss my plan. I called you to inform you of an executive decision. Your only job is to oversee the new addition to your team and make sure he's ready to meld with the team's game play before the next game."

He picked up a document and started scribbling something down, and I knew it was my sign that the conversation was over.

"Yes sir." I murmured through a clenched jaw and rose to my feet.

Just as I turned to walk out, coach's voice stopped me. "Let's get to the finals this time around, Moore. I'm counting on you."

Nodding, I walked off, fury curling through me. Matthews wasn't just a part of this team. He was my friend, my best friend, and over my dead body would I watch some other asshole steal his spot on this team.

I didn't care what I had to do. That blue eyed asshole wasn't replacing him.

The thought alone made me see red.

I was so lost in thought that it took me longer than I should have to hear the sound of the ruckus coming from down the hall. Without a second delay, I took to my heels, racing toward the hallway where all hell had broken loose.

"Go to hell!" I heard one of my teammates roar.

"Only if you come with me." An unfamiliar amused voice said.

I pushed through the throng of people and came to a halt where one of the defencemen has the new guy pinned to the wall. It seemed our new addition to the team had made one more enemy.

Travis I was undoing the lace on my skating shoes when someone let out a quiet 'holy shit'. I whirled around immediately, and noticed that most of the guys' attention was fixed on the flat screen TV hanging at the far wall of the locker room. Confused, I drifted toward the gathering crowd. "... As of this morning_" a middle aged reporter was saying. "The NHL has already released an official statement following the statement put up by the two eye witnesses at the time of the assault. The case of star player Neal Matthews attacking a fan at the beginning of the season caused large waves in the media, with him apologizing and both his team management and league removing him temporarily from the team roster until further investigation." My stomach lurched. "Investigation has been ongoing with only one witness agreeing to speak up, but that all changed last night when they finally spoke up to defend Mr. Matthews." The man continued. "According to the statement by the witnesses, Mr. Ma

TravisThe first hit came barely one minute into the game.A defenseman built like a freight train drove his shoulder into my chest the second I collected the puck. The impact rattled through my ribs, but I’d been expecting it. I absorbed the check, spun off the boards, and shoveled the puck toward Law before crashing into the glass. The crowd erupted, hungry for blood. Away games were always hostile, but this arena took things personally. Every touch of the puck earned us a chorus of boos. Every whistle brought another wave of jeers.I grinned despite myself. This was what I loved about hockey. The fast, unforgiving draw of it. “Behind you!” Sammy yelled.I pivoted just in time to intercept a pass, batting it down with my stick before launching forward. We immediately fell into position. Law took the left lane, while Sammy streaked down the middle. I waited until the defender committed before sliding the puck across.Law's stick hooked it.I watched with a smile as the puck sailed

HunterWatching hockey when I was supposed to be playing it was torture. I sat halfway up the arena stands with my elbows braced on my knees, glaring holes into the ice while our team warmed up below. The roar of the crowd rolled around me in waves, but all I could hear was the scrape of skates carving fresh lines into the rink. That should’ve been me. Instead, I was stuck wearing jeans and a team hoodie like some glorified mascot. My fingers curled into fists. This was all Travis' fault. The asshole probably enjoyed reminding me he could bench me whenever he pleased.Down on the ice, Law skated backward while chirping at Sammy. Sammy responded by spraying him with a shower of ice, earning a loud string of curses that carried all the way up into the stands.“Mind if I sit?”I glanced sideways. Zahara smiled politely, already lowering herself into the empty seat beside me.“Pretty sure it’s public seating.” I drawled, more than a little suspicious that she had chosen to sit at my side

TravisSomething was off.I felt it the second I stepped onto the team bus.The aisle was the same. Law was already arguing with another of the guys over whose playlist deserved custody of the speakers. A couple of the rookies were tossing protein bars at each other when they thought Coach Warren wasn’t looking. Sammy was sprawled across two seats like he owned the damn vehicle.Everything looked normal.Yet something was… missing.I scanned the bus without meaning to. No blond head shoved against the window. No beat-up headphones.Hunter Bailey wasn't tucked into one corner by himself pretending he didn’t notice the rest of us.The realization landed harder than it should have.Right. He was benched.Coach had announced it that morning, making some excuse about recovery protocols, even though everyone knew I’d pushed hardest for it.I’d gotten exactly what I wanted. Then why did the bus feel so damn empty?“You planning on standing there all day, Cap?” Law called. “Or are you waiting

Hunter I stood rooted to the spot long after Jack’s truck had vanished around the bend, my pulse still pounding in my ears.Thirty days.Coach O’Brien. The words echoed through my skull like a broken record.Beside me, my mother hadn’t moved. Her arms were folded tightly across her chest, her gaze fixed on the empty road as though Jack might suddenly reappear.I swallowed, then turned to her. “We need to go to the police.”She didn’t even look at me. “No.”I stared at her. “No? What do you mean no?” I repeated. Her head snapped toward me. “I said no.”“Mum_”“I heard you the first time.”My temper flared. “Jack just threatened us! Did you hear him?"“He blackmailed us.”“He threatened us with prison!”She rounded on me so fast I instinctively took a step back. “And whose fault would that be?” she hissed. The words hit harder than I expected.I clenched my jaw. “So that’s it?” I asked quietly. “We just let him extort us?”Her laugh was hollow. “You think the police are going to save u

Hunter "You are good?" I glanced over at Ivan who had been peering at me at intervals since the drive back to my home. I didn't know what he was seeing on my face, but hoped I was managing to hide the truth. Because the truth made no sense. What happened at that alley made no fucking sense. I had been debating with myself about my next course of action. Storm into Travis' room and ask him what the fuck was that was option A. Option B went more like pretending the whole thing didn't happen, and maybe moving out of the house entirely. I was long overdue to get my own place. Somewhere I didn't have to see Travis daily. Maybe I could even get traded after this season. "Hunter?" Ivan called. I blinked back to the present. "Yeah, I'm good. Peachy." "The club did not do you good." He pointed out."Nah, it was okay. It was a great idea. It helped." Did it really? "The purple haired lady came back pretty quick." He smirked at me. "You weren't up to the task? Or she was disappointed b

Hunter. Locating Travis hadn't been difficult. The entire team seemed to have an obsession with posting their every move on Instagram. A little stalking of Sammy's page and I found a blurry photo of them with their location tagged. I knew Travis didn't want me anywhere around him. I knew he hated

Travis "No." The word was ripped out of my mouth before I could stop it. Acid burned through my chest and I suddenly felt sick. It can't be. No. No. This can't be happening to me. This was a nightmare and any second now, I'll wake up. There was no way in hell the blond asshole was my step brothe

Travis "How was practice master Travis?" Mrs Johnson asked as I stepped into the house. She had been the housekeeper even before I was born and was the closest thing to a mother I had ever had since mine had disappeared when I was two. "The usual." I said, wiping an arm over my sweaty forehead.

Travis. "What the hell is going on here?" I barked. The defencemen glanced over his shoulder at me, eyebrows pulled down in a glare. Before he could say anything, the new guy grabbed his arm and spun him around in a lightning quick maneuver. One second he was pinned and the next he had a man the
