ELENA'S POV

The sanctuary smelled of old stone and weeping silver.

I found him near the base of the broken altar. His head rested against a moss-covered stone. His eyes were closed. The wolf-skin coat I had seen him wear since we were children was pulled tight around his broad shoulders. He looked smaller like this. Without the sneer, without the twin axes at his hips, he looked like the boy who used to race me through the snow before the world found out what we were.

I stepped quietly,

  • The Alpha Who Rejected Me   CHAPTER 119: THE BROKEN ELENA

ELENA'S POV The North did not march in silence. Five thousand pairs of leather boots crunched against the frozen mud. The rhythmic thud vibrated straight through the soles of my boots. Above us, the sky was the color of a bruised lung. It was pale gray at the horizon, bleeding into a suffocating purple where the Ashen Lord’s influence choked out the dawn. I walked at the head of the vanguard. To my left, Alpha Vance moved with the silent grace of a winter predator. His hand never strayed far from the hilt of his broadsword. To my right, Commander Brand barked orders to the flank lines, his scarred face set in a grim mask. Behind us, hidden within the heart of our formation, walked Kaelen. Every step he took was another heartbeat the ritual stole from him. No one spoke his name. We all knew where this march would end for him. I didn't look back at him. I couldn't. Every time I tried, the image of the jagged, violet rune burned into the sanctuary floor flashed behind my eyes

ELENA'S POV The sanctuary smelled of old stone and weeping silver. I stepped quietly, but his eyes opened anyway. The violet ring within his pupils pulsed faintly in the dark. He didn't jump. He didn't reach for a weapon. He just looked up at me from the floor, his expression bare. "Elena," he murmured. "You should be resting," I said, my voice softer than I intended. I sat down on the stone ledge across from him. I pulled my white-gold cloak tightly around my knees to keep out the chill. "The Alphas are arguing about the formation," I continued. "Brand wants the vangu

KAELEN'S POV "You look terrible," Tanya said. She didn't offer a hand. She didn't move closer. She simply stood by the ancient altar, her hands tucked into the deep folds of her traveler’s cloak. I stood up slowly, wiping the back of my sleeve across my face. The stoic mask tried to slide back into place, but the hinges were broken. My chest still hitched with the ragged aftershocks of the breakdown. "What are you doing here, Tanya?" My voice scraped like gravel against stone. "If Brand's sentinels catch you within the perimeter—" "They won't," she interrupted flatly. "They're too busy preparing the funeral pyres and checking the borders for Nikolai's advance guard. No one cares about a discarded pawn." She smiled, but it was a hollow, skeletal thing. "I know the truth, Kaelen. I found the journals Richard left behind in the southern estate before the Alphas burned it. I know what he did to my family. And I know what he did to you." The name of my father made my jaw ti

  • The Alpha Who Rejected Me   CHAPTER 116: KAELEN'S LAST NIGHT

KAELEN’S POV The door to the abandoned Bloodmoon sanctuary groaned. It was a heavy, iron-bound slab of rotting oak scraping against stone that hadn't seen the light of a torch in fifty years. I didn’t bring fire. I didn’t need it. The silver northern moonlight cut through the collapsed vaulted ceiling. It struck the dust-choked altar like a spear. This was where the first Alphas of the North had knelt to swear their blood oaths. Now, it was just a tomb of rotting pine and dead gods. My knees hit the stone. The impact cracked against my kneecaps. It was a sharp, grounding pain, but it wasn't enough to numb the pressure building behind my ribs. For years—I had been a wall. A fortress. I was the stoic prince who watched his birthright strip away without a single tear. I was the villain who wore hatred like armor because armor was the only thing that kept the blades from reaching my throat. But the armor was gone. The Grand Council had stripped it. Elena had outgrown it. And

  • The Alpha Who Rejected Me   CHAPTER 115: ACCEPTANCE

ALPHA VANCE’S POV I stepped forward, my massive frame moving like an unyielding wall of stone until I stood at the High Queen's left shoulder. My twin axes rested at my hips, but every warrior in the cavern knew I could draw them before most wolves could blink. Commander Brand's chest rose and fell with restrained fury. His broadsword was still pointed toward Kaelen's throat, but the certainty behind the blade had begun to crack. The prince did not move. He knelt in the mud without lowering his head, his torn soldier's tunic soaked with old blood, the violet curse around his neck pulsing with every weakening heartbeat. He had already accepted the sentence waiting for him. The only thing he asked for was time. I understood why the council hated him. I also understood why we needed him alive. "The High Queen has spoken," I said, my voice carrying across the stone chamber. "Our king is still trapped. Every moment we waste arguing is another moment the Ashen Lord tightens hi

  • The Alpha Who Rejected Me   CHAPTER 114: JUDGMENT

ELENA’S POV I sat upon the elevated granite ledge, my jaw locked into that stubborn, independent alignment that had carried me through the mud of the dead woods. Behind my ribs, the uncorrupted starlight of my Eclipse lineage burned like a silent, manic furnace, sending a soft white-gold shadow aura rippling across the dark rock walls. My eyes did not waver as I looked down into the muddy pit. Kaelen stood alone in the center of the council pit, his torn soldier's tunic stained dark with dried blood. He had come without a sword, without armor, and without even the dignity of a royal crest. Every shallow breath rattled through his failing lungs, the metallic-violet mark of Morana's curse burning against his throat like the final grains of an hourglass. He never looked at me. "I did not come here to beg for mercy," he said quietly, his voice carrying through the cavern without wavering. "I came because I owe this kingdom a debt that cannot be repaid." His eyes swept across the
