I am about to ask when a tiny mewling cry sends a jolt through me.
“The baby?” I ask in desperation, my voice cracking.
Celine smiles warmly. “He’s doing great. Strong little guy. We’ll bring him over in a moment, just let you rest a bit.”
A word sticks out. He. It’s a boy.
I shake my head, urgency sparking in my blurry vision. “No, now. Please.”
Celine hesitates for a moment, then nods. “Alright, but take it slow, okay?”
With surprising strength, I reach out. My fingers brush against the cool metal of the bassinet as Celine carefully wheels it closer. Inside, nestled in a cloud of white blankets, lies a tiny creature.
