POV: Araya Blackthorn’s ridge wore a crown of smoke. Dawn started for the horizon, then thought better of it. The sky was bruise-dark, Aetheria’s seam open like a careful wound. Wolves regrouped around banners that meant place, not ownership. Under my boots: black glass where Hollowflame cooled ashamed of itself. “Roots,” Nyxara warned, hot on my throat. He’s under you. Towering obsidian walls stretched toward the heavens, black stone gleaming beneath the sunlight like polished glass. Massive silver banners bearing the wolf crest of House Blackthorn snapped violently in the mountain winds. Guards stood atop every wall and tower, armored in black steel, their silver cloaks flowing behind them like shadows given form.

Ronan Midnight struck with twelve deep chimes from the clock tower above Blackthorne Mansion. The women stood at the edge of the forest beneath a sky bleached silver by the full moon. Forty-two figures lined the boundary marked by burning torches and a long strip of white stone laid into the earth. Beyond them waited darkness. The Blackthorne forest stretched for miles in every direction, dense with old pines, steep ravines, narrow streams, and hunting paths that twisted back on themselves. Fog gathered low between the trees, softening the roots and rocks beneath a pale veil.
