I pivoted once, twice…then slipped the ball clean between his legs. The entire gym gasped but I was too focused on scoring. Christopher was standing, frozen on the spot. That was the opportunity I needed to score one in. The ball bounced behind him, and I darted around his side, caught it, and made a layup so smooth the net didn’t even twitch.

On the opposite end of the rink glass, Theo’s doing the same for Tessa. The rest of the cheerleading crew are gathered around the bleachers near the penalty box. All thoughts of practice have been suspended till further notice. Even the hockey guys aren’t on the rink. I repositioned myself on the floor and raised my head to look at her. She had her phone between her hands as she smiled down at it. Reeves promptly set aside their score sheets, struggling through the roaring crowd to grab the microphone. “Calm down students! Can we stop the cheering for five minutes please?” Mrs. Sinatra waited for a slight lull in the noise before finally speaking, her voice carrying with pride and authority. “Students of Westbrook High,” she began, the words ringing clear, causing the crowd to hush.
