Every creak of the building made me jump, and even the guards patrolling outside didn’t ease my anxiety. Around 3 a.m., Dante’s phone vibrated. He glanced at the screen and immediately answered. I couldn’t make out the detective’s voice on the other end, but Dante’s clenched jaw and the way his eyes narrowed told me enough. “Are you sure?” he asked, his tone clipped. A pause. “Understood. Keep me updated.” He hung up and turned to me, his expression grim. “The call you got came from a burner phone. No trace.”

I grabbed another guard, practically carrying him as his legs gave out. Dante was doing the same, his hybrid strength allowing him to support two men at once. We worked frantically, desperately, racing against the fire consuming everything around us. More men made it out. Ten. Twelve. Fifteen. But there were still bodies on the floor, some guards who couldn't move, couldn't escape on their own. "Dante!" I screamed over the roar of flames. "There are more!" "I know!" He was already moving back into the smoke-filled room.
