We decide to stay at the only place that seems to take guests: an old wooden house turned makeshift hotel, with walls that creak and a receptionist who barely meets our eyes. The room is small, with a narrow bed and a window that looks out onto a dark alley. Demon tosses his jacket over the chair and flops onto the bed as if he’s been waiting for this moment his entire life.
“It’s not the presidential suite, but at least it doesn’t smell like damp… yet,” he says, turning his head toward me with that crooked smile.
