Regardless of how interesting Zelest Hawthorne might seem. “No!” I fired back, stepping away from him. The roles were reversed now as I took the usual fiery persona which was more of Zelest’s. “We’re nothing. Whatever this is, it’s fate’s cruel joke—a fluke. It’s never going to be more.” Regardless of how poised and indifferent he tried to look, I saw hurt flash in Zelest’s eyes as it did in my chest. It felt like my heart was being ripped away from my chest—rejecting my mate.

Their eyes hold a history of pain I can't begin to understand. "So I was born from a fated mate bond," I say slowly, "only to find my own fated mate eighteen years later?" The coincidence seems too perfect. "Not a coincidence," Elena corrects, her voice cutting through the tension. "Design. The Moon Goddess has plans within plans. Your parents' bond produced something unprecedented – a child with both Thompson and Moonheart blood. And now that child has bonded with the Harrison heir." Her eyes gleam with calculation. "Three packs united through one girl."

It was like something straight out of my daydreams, but with dark undercurrents pulling me in further. Just as I was starting to get lost in the story, the term "Fated Mate" caught my eye, jerking me out of the daydream. It shone on the page, glowing like a lighthouse. The idea that two halves of one soul could be in separate bodies and that they were meant to find each other was thrilling. My fingers tingled at the thought, each pulse echoing through the chaos of my emotions. Could it be real? My thoughts whirled like a tornado—not entirely because of the book, but because of the desperate longing buried in my chest.

I looked at that empty bedroom, I realized I was just a man standing in a very expensive cage, watching the woman I loved walk into a storm I’d helped brew. By 2:00 PM, the air in the house was toxic with my own thoughts. I had a gala to lead ,the "Fated Dynasties" charity event, a masterpiece of public relations designed to hide the blood on our hands. I had a tuxedo to fit. I had a father to lie to. I drove myself to the tailor in Sandton. I needed the movement. I needed to feel the wheel in my hands to convince myself I still had control over something.

The fate of an Unfortunate was worse than that of a wolf who had been rejected. If you got rejected, you could move on when you accept the rejection. There was no way to accept dying alone. Her aunt, Faye, was an Unfortunate too - it seemed to run in families, although the scientists and doctors said it wasn't genetic. Faye was as happy as she could be, though. She worked with the orphaned kids of the pack, because she said she knew what abandonment was like - the Goddess had abandoned her. Avery wasn't the motherly type, so she couldn't exactly do that. She was coarse and aggressive, and although sensitive, she was clumsy with her feelings.

"Wow, that was a lot to take in." Christian said nothing, instead he closed the book. "What is that book, anyway?" Christian ran his hand over the cover, "our history. Well, not just ours but the gods and titans and faeries." "You mean fairies?" Christian chuckled, "you will know the difference soon enough." "There's a difference?" He nodded, "but that is nothing to worry your head about. The Fates gift this book to all Alpha’s, Horde leaders or whoever governs over a Supernatural being, once you open it and find what you seek. It sucks you in, taking you back in time."

Caden dropped to the ground, hoping he wouldn't be seen. "What the fuck did I just do?" He knew what he did. He cast a spell that had a chance of changing the target's mate at a Werewolf. If the spell was successful then... "There's a higher chance it failed. I'm sure it failed," Caden convinced himself. Composing himself, he grabbed his spellbook before swiftly leaving the room, making sure to stay out of the Werewolf's sight. -----

We all nod in silent agreement. Looking around the delivery room, I see all of us sharing an emotion that most of us have forgotten about since the Fated Plague took so many of our loved ones and changed all of our lives in such horrific ways.
