The moment the cloth was lifted, Ruby’s soul practically left her body. Her scream cracked so sharply it could’ve torn the roof off. She bolted out of the room at the fastest speed of her life. Lilian caught a glimpse of what was inside the transparent box and turned ghost-pale. Terror gripped her as she tried to run, but her foot caught on the edge of the rug, and she stumbled just as Ruby came crashing into her from behind. The mother and daughter went down hard in a tangled heap.

Taking a deep breath, she turned back and hurried forward. Just a few more steps, and she would be out of the alley. Although it wasn't in a bustling area, there were usually residents passing by. However, as Ruby approached the alley's exit, a large hand suddenly reached out from behind her, covering her mouth. “Mmph!” Fear washed over her like a tidal wave. Her instinct was to struggle, but the hand bore a strange scent that caused her vision to blur and her strength to fade. Just as Ruby felt herself slipping into unconsciousness, the grip suddenly loosened.
