She didn’t answer. I didn’t ask again.

Something about yesterday felt… closer than it should’ve. She nods slowly, like she’s filing that away. “Why didn’t you tell me?” I ask. She hesitates. “Because he didn’t ask for you.” That lands clean. No distortion. Just… there. I nod once. “Okay.” Mara frowns slightly. “That’s it?” “What else is there?” “He could’ve asked.” “He could’ve,” I say. “He didn’t.” I lean back against the counter, arms crossing loosely. There’s no anger in it.

"I didn't catch the question." "We spoke about the..."

“What if you didn't?” What if I didn't…..

I said awkwardly. "But why didn't you call me?" He got up and followed me to the kitchen. "I thought you're here to see your dad." I pointed out. "I am but since you're here instead, can't I ask that question?" He asked. "You can." I shrugged. "So answer the question, why didn't you call me?" He asked. "Because I didn't want to." I said truthfully. "What do you mean you didn't want to?" He asked. "You told me to think about it and call you, I thought about it and I didn't want to call you." I answered.

She asked me. “Well, I don't know.”
