Agony shot through my frame. My head hung back in a soundless cry; my throat was dry and hoarse from days of subjugation. I struggled to move, forcing one foot in front of the other. For his spell to have broken, Massachusetts must have encountered some harm that incapacitated him—or, more favorably, deprived him of his life. My vision glitched, objects appearing as unintelligible, blurred shapes. I shook my head to clear my sight, but it was a terrible mistake; my brain felt as though it were being assaulted by a mass of pins.
