He froze when he saw Lyra drifting near the ceiling. "Emma! She’s doing it again!" Félix squeaked, nearly dropping the tray. He set it down frantically and lunged for the baby, catching her in mid-air and tucking her securely against his chest. "Lyra, we talked about this. Gravity is a friend. Gravity keeps us on the ground where the snacks are." Lyra just gurgled, reaching out to grab a handful of Félix’s blonde hair.

“I could have taken you down harder. Could’ve twisted wrong. I should’ve—” “You should’ve fallen,” she interrupted. “You did. Gravity works. The important part is that you didn’t tear anything in the process.” He frowned. “That’s not—” “This is rehab,” she said, cutting him off again, a little too quickly. “You fall. You get up. You do it again. It’s not a metaphor. It’s physics and muscle memory.” He studied her for a long beat. “Right,” he said finally. “Just physics.”

But the impact never came. As soon as they cleared the ceiling, the sensation of falling vanished. It was replaced by a sickening, dizzying lightness.
