I took deep breaths, steadying myself, and just then the door swung open, without a care for who laid within. Rowan walked in pointedly, his shoes a shiny shade of black. He looked confused, but no other expression lasted long, except the blank one he always kept on. There was a man beside him, quite built, shunned off to the sidelines. He had an expressionless face, much like the one on Rowan's, but with a hint of reverence on his, for who he'd come with.

“She’s clearly under stress.” I swallowed, my chest tight. Rejected again. Unnoticed, a small black lens near the corner of the ceiling blinked once—silent, watching. Somewhere else, Rowan leaned back in his chair, eyes fixed on the paused footage. “Interesting,” he murmured. “So,” his assistant said lightly, folding his arms, “is she afraid of needles… or the name she heard?” Rowan didn’t answer at first.

How could Marcus take something that happened in the dark and throw it into the light? And Rowan… As if he was summoned by the thought, the dining hall doors opened and he stepped inside. People turned and the noise dipped instantly. Rowan looked like he had been through a storm. His hair was messy, his expression was tense, and his eyes searched the room until they landed on me. Books and colorful learning cards were spread across the table while Rowan pointed excitedly at something in a workbook. The teacher stood immediately when she saw me. “Lady Brooks—” “That’ll be all for today,” I interrupted gently.

Rowan froze when he stepped in, then coughed awkwardly before bowing with that polite smile of his. “Alpha King,” he said, keeping his voice steady, “the board members are waiting.” I jumped up immediately, brushing invisible dust off my skirt as I tried to act normal. Rubin gazed down with furrowed brow and Ben on the other hand, just scoffed with a sharp punch in the air while he gazed away. Fred and Patrick instinctively tapped his shoulders and he shrugged them off. " What? " Rowan scoffed. "I'm I talking to rocks or what?– I said what's going on here!" He shouted which made Alixies jolt. Laura flinched, her eyes swiftly glanced up at him.

Rowan said, stepping forward with predatory grace, "lost twelve good men buying you time to evacuate your children. Would you like me to name them?" The hall fell silent except for the crackling of torches. "Finn Blackwood," Rowan continued, his voice cutting through the quiet like a blade. "Twenty-three years old, mated last spring. His wife is carrying their first pup." He took another step. "Thomas Grey. Thirty-one with three children, all under ten years old." Another step. "Shall I continue?" Marcus's jaw moved, but no words came out.

“You’re thinking too much.” “I’m not.” “You absolutely are.” Before Emma could respond, her office door opened. Without knocking. Naturally. Rowan Blackwood walked in. He took one look at the room.
