Kael frowned. “The Silence?” “A being that feeds on quiet,” Elena said. “On absence. On everything we’ve been trying to protect.” Mara swore under her breath. “And the Court wants to wake it?” “Yes,” Elena said. “And if they do, the north won’t be quiet anymore. It’ll be empty.”

Guarding. Waiting. In silence.

Just silence. And somehow, that silence said everything.

Chapter 43 POV: Lydia Hart I used to believe silence was safety. If I didn’t ask, if I didn’t look too closely, if I let love fill in the gaps where truth should have been, then nothing could hurt me. Silence was the soft place I landed when the world felt sharp. Now I know better. Silence is how they move pieces without you noticing. Silence is how men like Julian Kerr and Ethan Cross decide your fate while smiling into cameras. Silence is how you wake up one morning and realize your life has become evidence.

But his face remained blank, impassive, as though she was a stranger to him. But he knew. She could feel it in the way he glanced at her, a flicker of something unreadable in his dark eyes. Yet, just as quickly, his gaze moved on, devoid of warmth or acknowledgment. He knew of the bond….they both did. And it meant absolutely nothing to him. Claire swallowed hard, a wave of anger and heartbreak surging through her. She glared at him, every ounce of defiance she could summon burning in her eyes, letting him know just what she thought of him and his silent rejection.

He was her connection to the unseen, her window into the hidden realms. The silence stretched, thick and heavy, broken only by the faint static of the phone line. Riana held her breath, her senses on high alert, waiting for Kai's response. The air around her seemed to crackle with unseen energy, a palpable tension that prickled her skin. She felt a cold shiver run down her spine, a premonition of the darkness that lay ahead.

" Silence fell on the other side of the camera. I gave a wry smile and picked up my tray to continue working. It wasn't until 2:00 am that I dragged my exhausted body out through the bar's front door. The woman approached me again. "Julian, do you need the money because you're in some kind of trouble? I might be able to help you." The moment I looked up, blood suddenly gushed from my nose. A cry of alarm came from behind the camera. "Julian!"

He synchronized his breathing with Elion’s. In. Out. In. Out. Elion closed his eyes. He pulled out the notebook one last time. Anomaly 88: The Silence. Fact: Cale traded language for my life. Status: He is mute. Illiterate. But present. He wrote a promise. I will learn to listen to the silence. He put the book away. "Goodnight, Cale," Elion said. Cale squeezed his hand. Once for yes. It was a new language. A simple one.

“I am sorry, I was just trying to keep you from murdering someone in public.” His expression shifted - dark, unreadable. His eyes trailed across my face, lingering on my lips. Then his hand reached up, fingertips grazing my cheek. He always wore the same damn expression. Blank, unmoved, like nothing in this world could touch him. But somehow, in the silence and the stillness, he made sure I and everyone else felt it all - the cold, the control, the darkness wrapped beneath his skin.
