Not the whispers from politicians pretending they didn’t see the monster growing under our roof for years. But the silence. The kind that hangs in a room after someone you love stops breathing. I’d heard it the day they told me Sadie fell. I heard it again the night Henry said he couldn’t reach Liam. Now it was back, dragging its cold fingers across the mahogany of my office desk.

“You should have stayed quiet.” He nodded once. A sign for them to carry on and on his order, some of the men took turns raping her brutally while he watched in silence. Her screams echoed through the empty space. Kai didn’t flinch. He simply smoked, eyes dark with controlled rage. When they finished, Lucas’ sister spat blood onto the concrete floor. “You’re a monster.” Tito leaned toward Kai. “Boss, don’t kill her. Not yet. People are already talking. You kill her now and it’ll stain everything—your image, the baby’s future. Let her rot in prison. We can make sure she stays quiet there.”

Then silence, but not the empty kind. Someone was awake over there. Alert. Listening. Sierra settled her back against the wall, pulled her knees to her chest, and stared at the reinforced concrete separating her from whatever waited on the other side. Her wolf pushed against her ribs, desperate to reach it. "I can hear you breathing," Sierra said, because silence had never helped her and waiting for the worst to happen was somehow more exhausting than the worst itself. "Are you going to say something, or are we doing the silent treatment?"

It concerns the Silence itself — its nature, its origin, and its one vulnerability." Lira leaned forward. "Tell me." "The Silence cannot create. It can only consume. It has no will of its own, not truly — it is a void, an absence, a hunger that was born when the world was made. Everything that exists casts a shadow, and the Silence is the shadow of everything. It hates what it cannot be. It despises light, warmth, life, because those things are a reminder of its own emptiness."
