A distant rumble shook the heavens. The crack above the city widened slightly. Everyone looked up. The darkness beyond reality was moving. Watching. Waiting. The First Silence. Nova felt it immediately. Not fear. Not anger. Curiosity. The First Silence was observing. Learning. Like it always had. The Third Silence noticed too. His expression hardened. "He's here." The First Memory nodded. "Yes." The city grew brighter. Silver light flooded the horizon. Then the world became quiet. Perfectly quiet. Every sound vanished.

Darkness didn't come slow. She fell over the city. From one moment to the next. The golden lanterns are gone. Windows were black. The rain disappeared. Even the whisper of the stories tumulted. There was nothing for a heartbeat. No colors. No sounds. No orientation. Mara felt her stomach collapsed. Not because of the darkness. Because of silence. For she remembered another silence. To the island. At the moment before the awakening of the dreamer. Those seconds in which the world seemed to be lurking.

He could almost feel every moment again, like it is currently happening. Chris is being embraced by the demon or at least, that’s how Chris perceives it. He was being enveloped by the demon’s darkness. He doesn’t feel any physical pain, only the utter silence and coldness which he unusually feels refuge. He thinks it was ridiculous, he really thought that the demon would bite him or anything similar to feed on him.

I know for a fact that if I was truly settled and contented with what I have for the past centuries, I would have died by now. But I’m not dead, so my heart hasn’t reached it’ contentment. And while I don’t wish to see how it ends, there’s a longing curiosity inside of me that seeks to know what it is could sedate a monster like me. There was none, I thought. Until it happened. Bathed in sweat, Alissa woke up from sleep. Immediately she sat upright in bed, her heart beat to her chest and she quickly switched on the light. Immediately she calmed down when she saw the familiar bedroom, and Hannah, too, continued to sleep peacefully. Alissa got up and went into the bathroom to wash her face. When she came back she checked her watch. It was now four thirty. She doubted she would go back to sleep. She didn't even want to go back to sleep for fear of being haunted by nightmares again. Actually, she hadn't had nightmares for a long time, but now that she had told Hannah a bit about her past, everything had come up again. She quickly put on jeans and a sweater and left the

The drive over to the apartment was filled with an uncomfortable silence. Unasked questions hung in the air like a thick fog. Beads of sweat prickled on the back of the drivers neck as he too was smothered by the tension in the car. The seconds felt like minutes as the road seemed to stretch longer and longer before her eyes. Letting her eyes close, Thea suppressed a sigh as she leant her head against the window, she ignored the drumming of her head against the window as they drove over the bumpy terrain. Bellamy’s words playing on repeat in her head, ‘like our souls recognise each other’.

POV: LYRA I wake up choking on darkness. Not the kind of darkness where you close your eyes and still see shapes. This is worse. This is the kind where there is nothing. No light. No shadows. Just thick black silence pressing in from every side. My lungs drag in a sharp breath and cold air scrapes down my throat. “What…” My voice sounds strange in the dark. Small. I try to sit up. Metal snaps tight around my wrists. The sound echoes through the space with a violent clank and pain shoots up both my arms.
