I spent like three weeks trying to piece together what was happening with 'Siren Son'. The gist is this kid, Finn, finds out he's half-siren, which means his mom was this mythical sea creature that lured sailors to their doom. That's the main premise, obviously.

But the plot isn't just a 'oh no, I'm a monster' story. The real meat is in the conflicts. The internal one is huge—he's terrified of his own voice because he doesn't know how to control it, scared he might hurt people he loves. Then there's the external stuff: this secret society of humans called the Tidesworn who hunt down siren descendants, and also this ancient, fractured siren court that wants to claim him as a weapon. It's a messy three-way pull between his human family, his monstrous heritage, and the hunters who see him as a threat. The pacing in the middle third drags a bit with court politics, honestly.

It ends on a cliffhanger where he has to choose between silencing his siren side forever or embracing it to save his sister, which felt kinda predictable, but I'm still invested enough to see where book two goes.

I started 'Siren Son' expecting monster horror, but what hooked me was the messed-up family dynamic. The main guy, Leo, starts out seeing the siren almost like a project, this ancient creature to be studied. But the book cleverly uses their forced proximity—he's basically her keeper in this secluded coastal house—to peel back layers. Their conversations aren't just lore dumps; they're these tense, circular debates about nature versus nurture, free will versus instinct. You see his academic curiosity slowly morph into a desperate, personal need to understand her, which feels a lot like the early stages of any fraught relationship. It’s less about romance and more about two beings from utterly different worlds creating a fragile, shared language, and the author lets that language develop through small, cumulative details rather than big declarations.

The side characters, like Leo’s skeptical sister Mara, act as this great grounding wire. Her interactions with him show how his obsession is distorting his other relationships, which in turn makes the central bond feel even more isolated and intense. The development isn't always smooth or healthy, which I appreciated. There are moments of real mistrust and revulsion that aren't magically solved, they just become part of the complex texture between them.

I’ve been looking for 'Siren Son' in audio for ages! Last I checked, it’s not on Audible or any of the major audiobook platforms. Could be a rights thing, or maybe the publisher just hasn’t commissioned a narrator yet. I know the ebook is definitely out there—I picked it up on Google Play Books a while back. The formatting was fine, nothing fancy, but it got the job done.

It’s a shame about the audiobook, though. A story with that much atmospheric, almost lyrical prose would really sing with the right narrator. I keep hoping some indie audio producer might pick it up, but for now, if you want to read it, digital or physical copy is the way to go. I ended up just reading the ebook on my tablet.
