Kane's POV Glenn wakes me just after midnight. “Kane,” he says through our mind link. “They want you.” “Who?” I ask, still half-asleep and slightly confused. “The wolves. The funerals?” I wake with a rude bang, Glenn's words pulling me back to reality. Shit. War. Death. Destruction. “Right," I say. "I’m on my way.” I stumble out of bed and pull on a pair of jeans and a sweater. There’s a nip in the air. With any luck, winter would come early this year. It would give us time to regroup and recover.

Gym, great. Gym class with a bunch of werewolves and vampires. What could go wrong?

What was it called again? Helen woke up to the sound of the phone ringing next to her ear. Some thoughtless person had left it on the side table next to the couch rather than putting it back on the cradle. Helen fumbled around for it but knocked it onto the floor. It was Saturday and it felt too early for anyone to be calling them. Helen saw Mark’s slender brown fingers effortlessly pick up the phone through her eyelashes. So, he hadn’t gone home. “Hello,” he answered calmly.

I hit it as hard as I could, not caring if it broke, and sat up, knowing it was time to get ready for work. Groaning, I swung my legs off the side of the bed and sat up. I knew better than to lay back down or hit the snooze. I was likely not to wake up.

Author's POV Hearing the alarm, Ace woke up and looked at the wall clock. It was 7 in the morning.. Ace held his forehead as it was paining. Ace cursed the person who made this damm alarm as its sound increased his headache. "Dammm. This is so annoying" Ace muttered then sat down on his bed. He opened the bed side drawer and picked up the medicine. He poured a glass of water and gulped down the medicine. Ace put down the glass on the table then took his phone and mailed his assistant about today's schedule. Then he put his phone on his bed and got down from his bed.

I stop dreaming entirely, hovering in that shallow space just beneath waking where vigilance lives. Even when I drift, it’s never deep. Never safe. My body stays braced, muscles half-coiled, like rest is something I have to negotiate instead of surrender to. The wolf alert comes just before dawn. It’s not the full alarm. Not yet. A low-frequency signal that hums through the compound like a held breath. Movement detected. Unknown pack signature. No breach. Still. Ben is on his feet before the sound finishes registering. I’m already sitting up, pulse steady, mind clear in that way it only gets when threat replaces doubt.
