Tom lay on the bed, one leg in a cast, the lines of pain in his face soft with sleep. “Dad?” Jake shook him gently. Tom blinked, focused. “Jake? What the hell—” “I’m getting you both out.” “Out of what?” “You wouldn’t believe me. We have to go—now.” Gunfire barked downstairs. Tom went pale. “What was that?” “Trouble.” Jake reached the window—and stalled. The backyard was full of werewolves. They flowed over fences, through them, eyes catching moonlight like coals. “Oh, shit.”

The dungeon smelled like rust and fear. Rust from the old iron studs in the doors, from the chains bolted to stone. Fear from the wolves penned behind those doors—some of it fresh and sharp, some old and sunk deep into the walls themselves. Wolfsbane threaded through it all, a bitter, acrid sting that made my nose wrinkle, and my wolf flatten her ears. “This way,” Nyra said.

“Contact me if anything changes.” I head upstairs. The dungeons are in the basement under the packhouse. They have reinforced walls and ceilings so that anything that happens down here cannot be heard outside these walls.
