I knew the paper did not hold the quiet tremor that lived in my chest. When they left I sat alone at the kitchen table. The street lamp outside threw a pale stripe across the floor. I opened a fresh sheet of paper and wrote the lines I would repeat. I wrote them as bullets. Facts. Short sentences. Dates. File names. I read them aloud and then again.
