THE THINGS LOVE NEVER PROMISED

I didn't cry until I got home.

Perhaps that was the part that hurt the most. I had spent the entire drive convincing myself that I was fine. I had stopped at traffic lights, waited behind slow moving cars and even waved at a neighbour who happened to recognize me on my street. Anyone looking at me would have thought it was an ordinary evening. Only I knew that something had quietly fallen apart inside me. Adrian's words had followed me all the way home like my shadow, refusing to leave no matter how many times I tried to think about something else. “Elena, I never said we were”.

They were simple words. Honest words. Yet they had somehow undone years of silent hope in the space of a few seconds.

The house was already quiet like a grave yard when I stepped inside. My mother had left the porch light on as she always did whenever I came home late, and for reasons I couldn't explain, that small act of love nearly brought tears to my eyes. I slipped off my shoes by the door and climbed the stairs as carefully as I could, grateful that everyone had already gone to bed.

I wasn't ready to answer questions. I wasn't ready to hear my own voice. The only thing I wanted was to be alone long enough to convince myself that my heart would eventually stop hurting.

I didn't bother changing out of my dress. I simply sat at the foot of my bed, staring at nothing in particular while the room slowly disappeared into silence. My eyes drifted to the framed photograph on my bookshelf.

Adrian and I couldn't have been older than ten. We were both covered in paint after ruining an art competition, grinning proudly at the camera as though making a mess had been the entire goal. I smiled without meaning to before the smile slowly faded. There had never been a time in my life when Adrian wasn't somewhere in it. Every important memory somehow led back to him. Birthdays. School. Graduation. My first dance recital. Even the opening day of the studio. He had been there for all of it. Looking back now, I couldn't decide which hurt more losing the future I had imagined with him or realizing that every beautiful memory I owned suddenly felt different.

Unable to bear the silence any longer, I opened the bottom drawer of my wardrobe and took out the old notebook I hadn't touched in weeks. It had become a habit over the years, a place where I emptied the words I could never bring myself to say aloud. Some pages held little more than ordinary moments I didn't want to forget. Others were filled with dreams that seemed almost childish now. I turned the pages slowly until I found the one I had been looking for.

I think I'm in love with Adrian.

I had written it years ago after he waited outside my dance class in the rain because he didn't want me walking home alone. I remembered teasing him for standing there soaked instead of waiting inside his car. He had only shrugged and told me he had promised my mother he wouldn't let me walk home by myself. I remembered laughing all the way home that evening, wondering if anyone had ever been loved as quietly as I was.

A tear landed on the page before I realized I was crying.

I closed the notebook immediately and pressed it against my chest, but the tears refused to stop. They came without sound, rolling slowly down my face until they soaked into the fabric of my dress. It wasn't Adrian's fault. That thought returned again and again. He had never promised to love me. He had never asked me to wait for him. Somewhere along the way, I had mistaken his presence for a promise, and now I had no one to blame except myself.

My phone buzzed softly on the bedside table.

I already knew who it was before I reached for it.

Did you get home safely?

I stared at the message for what felt like forever.

How strange.

After everything that had happened, Adrian was still worried about whether I had reached home safely. That was who he had always been. Kind. Thoughtful. Reliable. He remembered birthdays without reminders, brought me food whenever I worked too late and never forgot to check whether I had eaten. Anyone watching us would probably think I was the luckiest woman alive.

Maybe that was why I had fallen in love with him.

Maybe that was why letting him go felt impossible.

My fingers hovered over the keyboard. I wanted to reply. I wanted to tell him I was home. I wanted to pretend tonight had never happened because pretending had always been easier than facing the truth.

Instead, I locked my phone and placed it back on the table.

If I answered now, tomorrow would look exactly like yesterday.

And I wasn't sure my heart could survive another day of loving a man who had never been afraid of losing me.

THE NAME I DIDN'T EXPECTThe next evening, I spent far too long deciding what to wear. It was ridiculous, especially considering Adrian had only asked me to help him with something. Still, I changed outfits three times before finally settling on a simple black dress and a pair of low heels. I stared at myself in the mirror and frowned. Why was I dressing up for Adrian? He had seen me in every possible state. In oversized shirts, messy hair and even the ridiculous pink pajamas my mother had bought me one Christmas. There was no reason for my heart to be beating so quickly. I picked up my bag and forced myself to leave before I could change again.Adrian was waiting outside his apartment when I arrived. He was dressed in a dark shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, and the moment he saw me, his eyes moved over me briefly before returning to my face. You're late. I glanced at my watch. I'm three minutes early. Still late by my standards, he said with a smile. I rolled my eyes

THE THINGS I KEPT IGNORINGThe next morning, I woke up with a dull ache in my chest. I had barely slept. Every time I closed my eyes, I heard Adrian's voice again. We grew up together. That's all. I had repeated those words so many times in my head that they had started to lose their meaning. Or maybe I was simply trying to make them mean something else. My phone lay beside my pillow, and I stared at it for several minutes before finally picking it up. There was no message from Adrian. I told myself I wasn't waiting for one, but by eight o'clock, I had checked my phone six times. By nine, I was angry with myself. Adrian and I had gone days without speaking before. Sometimes we argued. Sometimes he got busy. It wasn't unusual. There was no reason for me to be acting like a woman waiting for a confession that had never been promised. That thought should have comforted me. Instead, it made my chest hurt even more. I was halfway through preparing breakfast when my phone finally rang.

WHAT WE NEVER SAIDAfter that evening, I couldn't stop thinking about Adrian's hand leaving mine. It was such a small thing that I felt ridiculous for remembering it, yet my mind kept returning to the same moment. The laughter around us, my mother's teasing voice and the way Adrian had slowly pulled away as though he had suddenly remembered something. I tried to convince myself that I was imagining things. Maybe he had only wanted to reach for his drink. Maybe the conversation had made him uncomfortable because our parents were being too dramatic. There were a hundred possible explanations, and I clung to every single one of them because the alternative was too painful to consider.Adrian, however, behaved as if nothing had happened. The next morning, he sent me a picture of his breakfast and complained about the coffee. I replied with a laughing emoji, and the familiar rhythm of our conversations returned almost immediately. He told me about a meeting he was dreading, I complained a

THE WAY WE WEREThe next morning, I woke up before Adrian. His arm was still wrapped around my waist, his face buried against the back of my neck. For a while, I lay perfectly still, afraid that the slightest movement would wake him. Adrian slept heavily whenever he was tired, and I had always found it strangely comforting to watch him like this. Without his usual teasing smile or careless attitude, he looked younger. Almost like the boy I had grown up with.I remembered the first time I realized Adrian was handsome. I had been fifteen, and he had just returned from a summer camp. He had grown taller in the few weeks he was gone, his shoulders broader and his face sharper. When he walked into the living room, I had stared at him for so long that my mother eventually asked if I was feeling alright. Adrian had looked at me and laughed, completely unaware of the reason I couldn't stop staring. I had gone to my room that night and spent nearly an hour thinking about him. It was probably

TWO YEARSI spent the entire day pretending Adrian's words hadn't bothered me. It was almost embarrassing how hard I tried. I went to work, answered emails, attended meetings and even laughed at a joke one of my colleagues made during lunch. From the outside, I probably looked perfectly normal. Inside, however, I kept replaying the same conversation over and over again. We're fine the way we are. I hated those words, not because Adrian had said them, but because I no longer knew what they were supposed to mean. For two years, I had accepted whatever Adrian gave me without asking for more. I had told myself that our relationship was complicated, that everyone had their own pace and that love didn't always need a name. Whenever someone asked if we were together, I would smile and let Adrian answer for both of us. Sometimes he said we were best friends. Other times he simply laughed and changed the subject. I had never corrected him. Maybe I was afraid of what would happen if I did.T
