Due to my outstanding work performance, my boss grants me special permission to have flexible working hours. I am out until very late last night meeting a client, and I have only been asleep for a while when a call from my colleague wakes me up. "It's already 9:30 am! Why are you late again today?" I explain to her patiently that I worked overtime last night to finalize things with a client and have them sign the contract, so I won't be going into the office in the morning. My colleague snickers. "You'd better not think that you can skip work whenever you like just because you've achieved top sales in our department. "Today is our boss' son, Mr. Hammond's first day in the office. He might just tell you to pack your things and leave if you were to upset him in any way!" Despite the splitting headache I'm having, I try to recall it in my head. Alex Hammond, the man she's just mentioned, sounds very much like that fiance of mine, who desperately wants to tie the knot with me.

I step into his office, and he is already waiting behind the desk. His amber eyes lock onto mine the moment I enter—deep, intense, and unreadable, as if he is trying to reach something buried beneath everything I refuse to show. “You can’t work under me anymore, Ms. Robinson,” he says calmly. His voice is steady, controlled. Too controlled. I tilt my head slightly, pretending indifference. “Are you firing me, sir?” The word feels unfamiliar on my tongue, even now, like it carries a distance I’m not used to acknowledging. He exhales slowly and stands from his chair, closing the space between us just enough to make it harder to breathe. “I can’t continue pretending you don’t know what I want,” he replies. My fingers tighten at my side. I force myself to look away. “You know it’s not possible,” I say quietly. “You’re married.” And just like that, everything shifts. Because I know this conversation. I’ve lived it in silence long before today. Four years ago, he left to study abroad. He promised he would come back. He promised that what we had wasn’t over. So I waited. I built my life around that promise, holding on to the belief that love like ours didn’t simply end—it paused, it endured, it survived distance. We were each other’s first love. As I slump on the ground, I find myself staring at a pink turtle cushion hanging from Sandy's hip. That was a cushion I’d sewn for Owen over three sleepless nights before this trip, with a safety charm hidden inside.. Back then, Owen thinks this charm is childish-looking and embarrassing, so he has tossed it into the boot without looking at it. Sandy follows my line of sight and feels the turtle cushion near her hip. Then, she brushes the snow off the charm with a scowl on her face. "Owen told me that this is a piece of garbage that's taking up space at home. So, it serves as my cushion now. I don't think even old ladies are prone to making such lame crafts nowadays, right Brooke?"
