The call came unusual. And unexpectedly funny. Immediately I picked the call. Selene spends several minutes complaining about a disastrous street-food adventure she and Ravenna attempted earlier in the day. We turned the experience into an increasingly ridiculous story. I found myself laughing harder than I had in weeks. The ease of the conversation reminds me of how far we have come.

About the time she accidentally delivered someone's lunch order to the wrong building and ended up eating it herself because she could not find the right address. About the customer who tipped her with a singing bass mounted on a plaque because he had no cash. About the day she rode her bike through a parade route without realizing it and ended up being photographed by tourists who thought she was part of the show. The room filled with laughter. Real, genuine laughter. The kind that made your stomach hurt and your face ache.

At this, Danny shrugged casually, a lazy smile on his lips. "To be honest with you, there's nothing fun about puking, but- from experience- I can tell you that the fun thing is watching someone puke. Now that's entertainment!" He chortled, slapping his thigh in a comical manner. I laughed along, although still holding my own in argument. But, he was right, I did need to forget about all the troubles sometimes. I needed to let loose and relax. And, with that in mind, I told Danny how excited I was for tonight's party.

Acts I thought were just fun and a one off thing echoed in my ears as he recited them. How I had tried to suck the pimp’s huge length at an after party. I had gone out to pee and he had followed. Said he thought I might need company. I couldn't slip the whole dang thing inside, but I had it raw with him, and it was by far the best experience of my life. Now, with this horror breathing down my body, as if he had taken some enhancements, the worst experience of my life plays out before me. They fondle me, hands rough and unrestrained. Usually, when I don't remember anything the next day, I've normally done something stupid. Like once, I stripped completely naked and climbed into a tree thinking I was a monkey. It took Payton and the others nearly two hours to get me down." He burst out laughing, spraying coffee all over the place. "Oh God, I don't even know why I just told you that. Sorry, I overshare sometimes."

The absurdity of the moment overwhelmed me, shattering my composure into laughter that erupted from the depths of my being. I couldn't contain it, and I collapsed onto the soft lawn, clutching my stomach, tears streaming down my face. I felt cornered, like a prey in the middle of a zoo. Someone passed screaming on his cell phone, someone else bumped into a cable and fell, someone cursed such a bad word that I laughed. Despite finding it funny, it was clear that the unpreparedness for those people was not only in a mere delay, but because they did not offer enough opportunities for more qualified professionals to occupy the same position. It wasn't for nothing that they despaired.
