When we stand to leave, someone from the back calls out, half-mocking, and half-admiring, “Hey! ZZ merch for sale? I want one!”
Zarek bows, ridiculous and regal, and shouts, “Limited! Only five made!” The cafeteria roars; the sound is a tide that lifts us, and shields us.
It feels like a victory. It also feels like drowning.
Later, at the corridor, Kai slips up beside me. He’s a tick—small, annoying, and persistent. When the crowd thins, his face leans close enough to my ear that I smell his cheap cologne.
“You making a habit of collecting hearts?” he murmurs, smiling sharply. “Or is this another one of those attention stunts? You always did love a good audience.”
